i have an issue with blistering on my 66. they sanded it down to the original surfacethere are spots the size of a pin head that appear to be oozing some thing. they sand it and the next day it appears wet in the dust. i was going to have them try talc and acetone as sugested. can it be sealed with out gel coat? it is in for just this spot. the rest of the paint is very good and i do not want to tie it up for the summer. if the process fails i can give it back this winter and do what ever we have to for as long as needed. is there a sealer we can try? i saw referance to por 15 clear coat.

Re: help me get my car back from shop
You need to get this liquid out once and for all, not attempt to trap it beneath the surface. Take the car back as-is and park it in the sun as much as you can.- Top

Re: help me get my car back from shop
My understanding is this is often times an element that is coming through the fiberglass from the inside. Therein, worse comes to worse, you may have to cut that section of body material out and patch in a new section.
Hate the thought, and glad I never faced this myself.

Re: help me get my car back from shop
Was the car painted with base-clear or a single stage paint?
It sounds like you have solvent trapped beneath the paint surface.
I agree with Michael, you need to let the car sit in the sun for a while and see if the solvent popping continues.
If so the car should be stripped and repainted.
Good luck.- Top

Re: help me get my car back from shop
from what i know it was last painted in 76. the owner did indicate he stripped the car down to paint it. i should email him. another area is between the windshield and hood on the center cowl between the vents leading me to believe it is not brake fluid. it is a base coat clear coat finish. should i have them sand this down as well before i take it back? the idea of driving it with the paint removed is painfull. but it desearves to be done right. other than these areas the paint is very nice.- Top

Re: help me get my car back from shop
Bill,
Reading your post was like da ja vu all over again! I am the original owner of 1966 #23514. A coupe body built in Iona, MI. My cowl between the fresh air vents had exact same problem. Also the left fender top (area around the master cylinder) for about two feet in front of the door. My problems started about 6-7 years ago, small pinhead sized bubbles would appear and oz a clear, viscus liquid. Temp sensitive.
My car had one lacquer repaint done in 1979, body stripped to glass, Featherfill applied, sealed, shot with Du Pont lacquer. Body had never been damaged.
I am finishing a body off paint job now, can't really tell yet if we were able to cure the problem. I think time/heat will be the only judge.
Here's what we found: with body stripped to glass and exposed to NM Summer heat for several weeks the mystery fluid would still appear, but seemed to slow as time went by. Talked to MANY painters, got lots of suggestions, including replace offending panels. A very well known NCRS body man suggested using Ecklers Spray GelCoat. We did. Painted car with Du Pont base/clear, paint is now 5 months old and no hint of problems yet. I don't think this means anything as not enough time (or heat) has been applied yet. No one could prove one way or the other, but several body men wondered about the old Featherfill we applied in 1979. Could it be decomposing? Don't know. Let's stay in touch, I'll let you know if problem reappears on my car. If you have questions, email me. Good luck! Bill- Top

Re: help me get my car back from shop
Take a good look, are any of the bad spots press mold replacement panels? Most of all the reproduction panels sold over the years have silicone in them and no matter what you do the paint gets the same pimples and they keep coming back, or if the car ever had silcone brake fluid splashed on it (It does happen) or was it ever waxed with a silicone base wax, it goes all the way into the paint and into the fiberglass and it is there forever.- Top

Re: help me get my car back from shop
what is interesting as bill and i have the same yr. mine is an AO smith as i assume his is and why are they both affected in only a limited but same area? they were both painted around the same time. bill, what color is your car? mine is nassau blue.my car does now have silicone brake fluid but why the cowl? and he is the original owner and knows the history. i will email the owner that had mine when it was last painted. i think bill and i have the same contamination and i wonder if it is an AO smith problem. my car is earlier nov 22nd #6600 some thing, i do not recall the exact vin right off.- Top

Re: help me get my car back from shop
I stripped mine down to the bare glass then sealed with DPLF before priming. Then went with lacquer. The bubbling/oozing effect you are referring to could have come from impurities/contamination in the paint or the thinner used. This could cause the migration and gassing off at the surface. I would expect you to see continued bubbling if that is the case.- Top

Re: help me get my car back from shop
Bill,
My car is Rally Red, all original body panels. This "mystery liquid" did not show up till 15-16 years after the one repaint. Several knowledgable people thought it might be the Featherfill breaking down, but no one is sure. If it is Featherfill, why only in these two areas?
I am very close to being on the road again after a 20 month restoration. We'll see how it holds up under the New Mexico sun, if this paint job last 15-16 years I'll be a happy camper. Bill- Top

Re: help me get my car back from shop
bill. were they able to just do these 2 areas in the ecklers gel coat? my shop said they had to stop the bleed out before they can use it, i wanted to get your take on it. what prep did you do before using it? at this point i would rather have the car how it was, as it is 85 today in vermont and we do not have long summers here.bill- Top
