I am needing a tool to put the rivets in my rebound straps on my C1. Someone said you could find them on e-bay, but I've had no luck. Also I heard you could make one. I would like to do this instead of renting it from CC. Anyone know where to get one quickly?????

Re: Mongoose tool
If you guys send me an e-mail I will send you an article on rebound strap by Joe Calgano (sp?) and some photos of the one I made. Unfortunately, I'm out of space to post any new photos on the TDB and it's being looked into. gchesnut@charter.net Gary....NCRS Texas Chapter

Re: Mongoose tool
From the photos of those available for rent in the common Corvette catalogs, the rivet tool looks to be little more than a common beam clamp with a metal rod welded or threaded to the side for leverage while tightening. Perhaps the mating surfaces are made concave to better form a mushroom shape on the rivet, but even that wouldn't be tough by making divots with a correct sized drill bit. I have a few spare beam clamps kicking around and was going to make a prototype one of these days...
For those that don't know, a beam clamp is used to clip equipment such as a warehouse heater or pipes etc. to exposed, overhead I-beams or joists. It has a C shape with a foot on one side and threaded screw on the other which tightens the clamp to the beam. It also has a female threaded bore along the long axis into which a threaded rod with a jam nut is inserted. The other end of the threaded rod bears the equipment being hung from the beam.
Beam clamps are cheap and come in a variety of different sizes. I am not sure if places like Home Depot sell them, but I would guess that Grainger, MSC and any local plumbing and heating supply house will stock them.- Top

Re: Mongoose tool
Search for"rebound strap riveting tool" in the archives, you will find info regarding The Mongoose which I fabricated and sold in the past. I wrote an article for the Restorer describing how to make this tool in Vol.21, No. 3 ; Winter issue 1995.- Top

Re: Mongoose tool
Forget the Mongoose. Buy yourself a pneumatic aircraft rivet gun. Or you can also buy an el-cheapo muffler chisel gun and buy the insert/shafts .401 shaft size, used in the aircraft rivet setting guns and have at it. The interchangeable shafts are avaliable in all rivet sizes. Flat, concave small, medium, large, etc. You will also need a bucking bar. Bucking Bar: A chunk of heavy iron coming in various shapes and sizes to fit in odd spaces. Look on ebay for the shafts and gun. They are mostly used and cheap. It is so easy you won't believe it. Have the rivet shaft extending no more than 1/8" past opening. Cut to the 1/8". Put your rivet gut onto head of rivet and at the same time hold your bucking bar up against the rivet shaft. Now squeeze the trigger and about 3-5 raps of the air gun and your done. Go to ebay and look up aircraft rivet tools/guns.

Re: Mongoose tool
The aircraft pneumatic rivet gun works on all rivets on corvettes. Not pop rivets. I used this technique on my 57 rebound straps after trying to come up with several hand held rivet press tools. I was telling a certified aircraft mechanic at work and he borrowed me his aircraft rivet gun. Piece of cake and fast as lightening. Remember to keep the bucking bar up tight to the rivet's shaft end when you pull the trigger on the gun. On most of these type of rivets no more than 1/8' of shaft should be extended out. Takes about 3-5 seconds. I have heard others on this forum speak of using an aircraft pneumatic rivet gun. If you have trouble or need more hands then maybe use a vice grip to help hold your assembly all together while you concentrate on the bucking bar, rivet, and gun. Have fun and Good Luck

Re: Mongoose tool
Ebay right now has many used aircraft rivet gun kits with the .401 assorted shafts. Look for a kit with a bucking bar and the heads of these shafts that will fit onto your rivet heads. They are as cheap as $12.00 for a kit. I bought mine used on ebay 12 years ago and still rivetting.

Re: Mongoose tool
As I earlier stated, You can go and buy a new el-cheapo taiwanese muffler chisel gun, around $14.00. Buy the individual rivet shaft inserts on ebay used with a bucking bar on ebay. Be sure both gun and chisels are the .401 shaft size. The advantage of buying the gun with the shafts, you will know the shafts work with the gun. A large flat sided hammer can be substituted for a bucking bar. On shaped bucking bars are designed to fit into tight corners, angles, blind spots etc..
Have fun. DG- Top

Re: Mongoose tool
I notice Ebay has 2x, 3x, and 4x rivet guns listed. Am I correct in assuming these represent different sizes and if so, is one better than another? Will the $20-30 air impact guns at Lowes work with proper rivet tool? If so, are they all a standard size for which the aircraft rivet tools will fit?
Thanks

Re: Mongoose tool
I am not certain what this 2x 3x 4x is all about. Could it be strength of impact? Email thr seller to see what he means by this 2x 3x 4x. I bought a muffler chisel gun at Menards years ago. It works with all the aircraft rivet attachments I bought used on ebay years ago. .401 size.
