    69-69 tank stickers

    Here's an easy one...

How do you tie a tank sticker to a car? Since the tank sticker isn't serialized I can't see how this can be done...or can it? This is my sticker. The one with it still on the tank was taken in 88 and the other one was taken last fall after I removed it.

FYI the build number writen on my car is 392, not 348 as is in the sticker and yes it IS the original tank sticker.

    Thanks again.

Does your VIN# end in 348 or 848 or within a digit or two?

The number written on the various body panels does NOT refer/correlate with the number penciled on the tank sheet... but the VIN# does.

If you had a corresponding DEALER ORDER COPY Page 7 it would contain all the info on your tank sticker, PLUS the actual VIN#, engine, trans, diff date codes, the key codes, and actual build completion date, not the body build date on the trim tag. Now you would have documentation tied to the VIN.

In this day of phonies etc nothing says one can't have an original sticker on an original tank that has been moved from another vehicle......

      Greg,

1971 & '72 owners are more fortunate, as the vin is on the Corvette Order Copy document commonly seen on top of fuel tanks. There is an exception for the '71 year.

Your pictures are exactly why I try to convince owners not to leave that fragile document on their tanks once they are aware that the possibility exists that it is still there. Time, exposure to the elements will waste it away to uselessness, unless care is taken.

        Warren & Steve,

How does one remove the tank sticker from a tank (out of the car) when it is securely glued and in fragile condition. I have been very carefully cleaning my '69 build sheet with light strokes of a new paint brush after tenderly drying it with a heat gun. The darkened (dirty) area on the right seems to persist. The original shipper copy you have authenticates the car and options.... a valuable piece of documentation. This, IMHO, would be better documentation than the tank sticker as it carries the VIN# if you need to authenticate the car. Not many owners have this item and thus the tank sticker is the next best thing......

I have no good way of removing the tank sticker.......

            Kent,

I remove the fragile paper by using a very thin razor blade held in a window scraper tool. I make sure that all the glue and other substances are scraped from the tank and that these are still attached to the Corvette Order Copy sheet.

              Kent,

After I cleaned my tank sticker with a paint brush (do not use compressed air), I was able to lift 99% of what was on my tank using a large sheet of sticky laminate paper.

Simply rub the paper onto the tank sticker & continually attemt to lift the sheet. Use a razor blade to "help" any parts that are directly stuck to the glue. With some patience, you should be able to get the whole thing. Then use a second sheet to laminate the back side & protect the sheet.

Once off, I scanned it & then put a copy on my new tank prior to installation.

              Good luck,

              Anhtony

                Interesting...

Steve how did you know that my S/N ended in 848? Is there something on the sticker that you can see?

                  Re: 69-69 tank stickers

Tank stickers almost always have a penciled 2 or 3 digit number on them. Early tank stickers, 67-69 had this number typically 1 or 2 digits ahead of the VIN# with a repeat every 500 VIN#s Later ones were right on....
Example: VIN ending in 321: the penciled number would be 319-321 range

VIN ending in 821: the penciled number would be 319-321 range

Yours had 348 penciled on it
