    Early '65 disc brake pad retainer pins & clips

    How many of you have seen these 1st design pins & clips ? I believe this is the original one off my 014xx car, shown installed, with a cotter pin on the far end. Rear caliper itself is off a late '65. This pin/clip(s) configuration is shown in the 1965 Corvette Shop Manual.

    By the time the '66 Chassis Service Manual was issued, the pin changed to the nail-head design with cotter pin, as I show laying on the table below the caliper.

    Hello Wayne;
    Thanks for reminding me of the double ended cotter or other clip design pins.
    Had forgotten about them.

      Wayne,
      What is the understanding on when the actual change to the cotter pin occured, late 66 calendar year?

        I'd be thinking during the '65 model run. I owned 12088 in the early 70's, untouched original, and it had the usual configuration without hairpin clip or extra cotter pin.

          Ron & Bill -- too bad this detail is not shown in the AIM (assembly done elsewhere). I'm thinking the pad retention pin change occured pre-mid '65 production, or even earlier. Nolan's Vol 2 shows prototype 396 detail around rear sway bar & linkage (pg. 361), and Burroughs' VIN 14917 (pgs. 59, 78) all show the nail-head design on the outboard end of the pin (normal cotter pin inboard, not the special clip).

          Strange that this feature is not mentioned more often. Hard to follow the part# revision history based on group numbers alone. In the Jan 1970 P&A30B, the exploded diagram still shows the 1st design pin with the special clip on both ends .

          I replaced the original calipers off '65 #2356x in July 1989, and I have them in a box in my basement; just checked and 3 have the nail-head pin (4th has no pin).
