    Orange overspray

Just had my '69 BB rebuilt and a very knowledgeable restoration shop advised me to paint the engine this way. It happens to be a late March engine and these original exhaust manifolds had some yellowish paint residue on them, both outside and inside. This original bellhousing (as well as the fork and boot) had some overspray, as well as a lot of runs, drips and errors.

Question: Do you think the overspray on the intake manifold, exhaust manifolds, bypass hose and bellhousing/fork/boot is overkill? Or am I on track for no points deduction, once the paint burns off the exhaust manifolds? In other words, would you have done it this way?

PS - I really like the over-restored look, and these exhaust manifolds looked beautiful after media blasting. I wanted to coat them with something to prevent rust and mount them to an orange block with my re-plated black oxide bolts. I am really struggling with this "as it left the factory" level of restoration. Any encouragement is appreciated on the road to Top Flight.

I don't believe the 'nose' of the water pump should be heavily painted, and definitely not the mounting flange for the fan clutch! Overspray on the water pump bypass hose is excessive IMHO.

Intake manifolds have signs of overspray at the mounting flange with the heads due to a poorly fitting mask.

Bell housing on a BB should be completely covered IIRC, but as always stand to be corrected.

Mike is right about the bellhousing, and the water pump nose. Also no paint on the front face of the harmonic damper (where the pulley bolts up), and no paint on the stamp pad.

Where you have paint, it is too heavy. The paint operation at both Tonawanda and Flint must have moved too fast for them to get a heavy coating on the engines.

Believe your both on track but understand bell housing was not fully covered with paint. The bell housing as I understand got a "courtesy spray" as the painter was painting the rear of the engine. Similar to the image above BUT not even across the housing nor as heavy Secondly, the by pass hose from intake to water pump had a mask of sorts that kept paint off the majority of the hose showing only paint at each end of the hose.

Guys....that's my story and I'm sticking to it!

I believe we had a really good discussion about engine paint not to long ago. A very knowledgeable person worked out they had 10 seconds to paint an engine with what was kind of like a fire hose. Everything bolted on the donk was orange no time to be fancy on the production line. Stewy

The exhaust manifolds were not attached to the engine when painted for the 69 model year. For 67 and earlier BBs they were. They should have no over spray.

I also agree that you by pass hose is over painted. There should be some over spray, but not completely painted as you have.

Coverage on bell housing can vary widely. BBs seem to have more coverage then SBs. On my 68 BB the bell housing was completely covered with the exception of the end face.

Michael, the overspray was only slightly on ONE end of the bypass hose with aluminium intakes.

Although you may indeed be correct, this is in conflict with the 68/69 judging manual which states that some known original engines have had exhibited remnants of paint on the exhaust manifolds.
