Has anyone ever seen a protecto plate re-issued after ownership changed hands?

Re: 1969 RE-ISSUED PROTECTO PLATE
Jimmy-----
The Protecto-Plates were produced at the vehicle assembly plants and were supplied with the vehicle to the ordering dealer. The only part of the plate that was added by the dealer was the "reverse image" dymo tape with the original purchaser's name and address. I cannot see any conceiveable way that a plate, iself, could be "re-issued". However, the dymo tape could easily have been replaced, either by the dealer at the time of transfer of ownership of the vehicle to a subsequent purchaser or by someone else with an appropriately configured dymo labeler and tape. These were not all that difficult to come by.
Since the primary purpose of the Protecto-Plate was for warranty repair purposes, it is possible, I suppose, that a Chevrolet dealer who resold a car within the warranty period might change the owner's name on the plate by replacing the dymo tape. Beyond the warranty period I can see no reason for a dealer to replace the tape.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 1969 RE-ISSUED PROTECTO PLATE
I am aware that in the 5 or 50 years, where the warranty was good for 5 years or 50,000 miles, there was a trnasfer process. I had a copy of an application form from a '68 Camaro transfer, but I was unable to obtain the plate. I have talked to people who claimed that the new palte did not carry the full data from the original, just the Vin and the new owners name, for what it's worth.- Top

Re: 1969 RE-ISSUED PROTECTO PLATE
Jimmy - As Bill Clupper pointed out, a new owner (or even an original owner who lost the original one) could request a reissue warranty book which included a new POP. To the best of my knowledge they would be issued one as long as the vehicle was still within the warranty period. I don't think many new owners went this route. Joe Lucia's comment is more plausible and would be an easier route to go, i.e. just have the dealer make a new GM DYMO tape for the new owner and install it in the warranty book if it's still with the car. I'll check the POP in the '67 reissue warranty book I have and see if the original configuration information on engine, card, trans, etc. is on it or if it's only the new owner's name and address and let you know. BTW, the POP in the reissue warranty book (at least the '67 one I have) does not use the dealer installed GM DYMO tape. All the owner's information such as the name and address are stamped on the POP. Pete- Top

Re: 1969 RE-ISSUED PROTECTO PLATE
Guys,
The reason why I ask is I have a copy of the GM form used and a 1969 transfer from the original owner to the 2nd when the car was less than 1 year old. (I have copies of both plates). This came from GM if I am not mistaken, not from the dealer. I have been going to do an article on this for 10 years. This was a 427 coupe and you are right, there is the new owners name on the plate but no engine, trans, or rear end data.- Top

Re: 1969 RE-ISSUED PROTECTO PLATE
Hello All ~
Bill is correct regarding the protect-o-plate information, it has the new owners name but NO engine id or trim information. I have a '68 protection plan that was transfered in Mar '69 using a blue green form called "APPLICATION FOR TRANSFER of WARRANTY (GSD 777-T Rev. 1-69). This has all the engine, trim, paint, etc information as well as the original owners name & address. The back page of the protection plan has been cut in half & a "subsequent vehicle owner" form as been attached with the POP...
It's a silver '68 BB coupe VIN S4098xx...
Hope this helps,

Re: 1969 RE-ISSUED PROTECTO PLATE *TL*
Now I am confused, I am holding in my hand the re-issued POP for my 72 LT1 A/C coupe. It is all metal no Dymo tape, the original owners name, address, delivery date, engine data, transmission data, rear end data and vin are all present on this plate. I have always been told it was a re-issued plate. This includes my conversation with the original owner. He worked with my Dad and was a member of the local Corvette club in the early 70's as was I. Is this a re-issued plate, why does it have the engine, rear end, and transmission data included?

Re: Re-issue POP's only have the Vin #....... *TL*
George your response sounds mater of fact? I have owned this car since the late 70's, before there were reproduction POP's available. I know and am still friends with the previous owners. There is no doubt this is a real plate. It was issued to the original owner and is in his name. It definitely has all the data on it. VO619CKY, AAW173-H, P2H15, 1Z37L2S525127. Original owners name, address, city, state and zip are stamped into plate just like the above information. In addition it has a 065 and the delivery date of 7-10-72 stamped into the plate. This is incidentally the same date marked as the delivery date in the warranty book, which is original. The original owner remembers it being re-issued but does not remember why.

Re: Re-issue or Transfer POP
Another option might be the year of the reissed warranty book. I have a '67 reissue and I also found I have a '66 reissued warranty book both with POPs. Both books have REPLACEMENT distictly printed in red on the cover and both POPs have everything including the owner's name, VIN, engine build, etc as Roy's 1970, stamped on the plate, i.e. no GM DYMO tape. So, if some one has an example of a REPLACEMENT book with a POP with all and I mean all the data that was on the original POP and someone that has an example of a REPLACEMENT POP with only the owner's name, there could be two if not more variations of formatting of the POPs in the REPLACEMENT warranty books. I can deal with that, since we weren't there to witness the process, I agree with Roy, I don't think we should be dealing with definites or absolutes since our data pool is very limited at this point. But, I'm sure we'll get some more examples and get a better understanding of the process that occurred 25 -30 plus years ago. Pete- Top

Re: 1969 RE-ISSUED PROTECTO PLATE
Roy, there may be a difference between a "reissue" (for whatever reason) to the original owner (lost, stolen, ???) and a "Transfer of Warranty" to a new owner. I don't remember how long the 5 or 50 warranty was in effect, but I thought it ended around '69. ( Rumor has it the mfr.s lost a bundle on the long warranty) Then again, policy could have changed through the years.- Top

Yep, what I say is the truth, the whole truth and.
nothing but the truth. Here is what the POP sticker says:
SUBSEQUENT VEHICLE OWNER
From your recent request for a transfer of warranty, a new Protect-O-Plate has been manifactured and is attached to this card.
The Protect-O-Plate entitles to Warranty priveleges in any Authorized Chevrolet Dealership, if your Chevrolet built vehicle requires Warranty services.
Please attach this card to your Owners Protection Plan booklet located in the gloves compartment of your vehicle as follows.
1. Remove the protective covering from the above adhesive 2. Then place the card on inside of back cover of the Owners Protection Plan booklet. The arrows on the card should be aligned with the cut-off end of existing back cover. 3. Place the Owner Protection Plan booklet in your vehicle's glove compartment.
CHEVROLET MOTORS DIVISION, GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION, DETROIT, MICH.
Roy, I'm sending you a digital pic of the above.- Top

Re: Yep, what I say is the truth, the whole truth *TL*
George,
Apparently the difference here is my re-issued POP was to the original owner not a subsequent owner as speculated by others above. I do not know any other reason, believe me it is real, it is a re-issue and it has all the numbers just as I stated. So all re-issue POP's do not have just the vin.
