Fuel Filter '65 Corvette 300 hp AFB MT

    Hello,

I'd like to know if a fuel filter for my '65 300 hp mt AFB is still available from GM: either the original black AC Delco GF 90 or a suitable replacement (I suppose a silver one). In this case I would be happy if someone could provide me with the GM part no. THX in advance.

It's still available. However, while 100% functional, it's not configured the same as originals. I believe the current product is not painted, at all, and is manufactured with a stainless steel shell. It's slightly larger in OD than original, too. GM part number is 5650677 and Delco system part number is, of course, GF-90.

I think someone (maybe Corvette Specialties of Maryland?) has just released a new, accurate reproduction of the GF-90 fuel filter, without the indentations on the hex fittings; saw one on eBay a week or so ago.

I just picked the one up from ebay, and received it yesterday. It is from Corvette Specialties of Maryland. It does not have the notches in the fittings, and looks like a better repro than what has been available previously.

John -- I have a couple of these black GF90's which are service and at least 20 years old. The '65 TIM&JG calls for "WITH single groove".

Here's another Silver GF90 without notches on the hex ends. [had 2 of them, bought at Hawaii GM dealer closeout in 1980). So I guess the question is what color had the grooves. I have another pic taken of my '65 in April 1968 (L79, black GF90) and you can see the grooves (if I can find the pic).

Found it ! B&W 35mm pic of black GF90 on my first ever car; '65 L79 convertible #04835, back in April of 1968, when I put a purchase deposit down.

You can see the groove on the hex fitting. I know we can't base "typical factory installation" on just one example, not to mention a car that was in use for 40 months before I acquired it. But it sure looks stock to me. I replaced the filter about 4 months later as part of a tune-up, and the GM dealer told me only the GF-99 was available, so you had to plug a vent/return ? line by soldering.

I agree. The 1500 mile Krughoff green/saddle 65 FI car had the original black GF-90 filter and it had the groove. Pretty sure I still have an engine shot that shows the filter.

I've seen originals with and without the groove.

Just curious.... what filter part number is shown in the 65 AIM? (will be different than the service part number)

Curiously, the GF-90, aka GM #5650677, has NEVER been cataloged by GM for replacement for applications originally using it. Also, it's never been available through the GM parts system. From the very beginning, the AC GF-99, aka GM #5650899, has been the only filter cataloged by and available through the General Motors parts system for C2 applications originally using the GF-90. The GF-99 does require the soldering closed of a fuel return nipple.

At the same time, the GF-90, aka GM #5650677, has been CONTINUOUSLY available through the Delco parts system. GM dealers could always and can still obtain it through the Delco parts system as long as the customer asks for it by part number and not through an application look-up. Why anyone would want to get involved in buying a filter that they had to solder up an unused fitting prior to use and why GM would effectively require that WHEN THE EXACT ORIGINAL FILTER WAS STILL AVAILABLE is completely beyond me. But, that's how it's always been and remains.

Of course, the current GF-90 is configured differently than the originals. However, the current GF-99 is also configured differently than originals, but it still requires soldering up the unused fitting.

With respect to the fittings on the ends of the filters, I THINK that those with the "notches" in the middle are characteristic of fittings manufactured by Parker-Hannefin which was likely ONE of the sources GM used for such pieces. Given the volume of gas filters using "dry-seal" fittings in "days-of-old", I expect that GM had multiple sources.
