can someone post a picture of the timing tab on an original corvette 396 . also check if there are a pair of holes drilled for the dowel pins on the face of the block(doubt these are on original 396 covers consider these as late 66 or 67 addition) and also check for presence or absence of a weld nut on the extreme bottom of the timing chain cover to accept a 1/4" hex head bolt up thru the oil pan(also believe the weld nut didn't appear till 1967). picture of tab will be every helpful. thanks, mike

Re: 396 timing chain cover timing tab
Hi Mike . This is the timing cover off of #17346 . It is for a 8" damper and has no holes. The tab is 1 1/2 " long. I think all 66 425 hp and newer tabs were close toDSCN1586.jpgDSCN1588.jpgDSCN1587.jpg 2" long- Top

Mike-----
1965-66 big block timing covers had no dowel pin holes. The dowel pins came into use for 1967.
1965-66 big blocks had the timing cover with weld nut. This style cover ended ABOUT 1967.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 396 timing chain cover timing tab
ok boys , here's what i've concluded from the above posts and inspecting several of KC strawmyer's 396 vets. 1) no holes for dowel pins,2) presence of weld nut at 6 o'clock, 3) the tab is 1 1/2" in length and 15/16ths to 1" wide.4) there are but two slash marks under the "O". 5) the only alpha stampings on the 396 tab is an "A" and an"O". the 66 up 427ci tabs are 2" x 1" and they are stamped "A" , "O" and "R" on the tabs. not sure but believe the weld nut was deleted on the timing chain covers in late 67 or 1968 model year 427ci's. your thoughts boys? thanks,mike- Top
