71 Tach Cable Routing around Ingition Shielding

    Hi Team

Car running great. Just installed ignition shielding and had routed tach cable around outside of Chome ignition shield. It tore my cable I guess as it warmed up the tight turn was too much. I assume the correct routing for the Tach cable is under the ignition shielding?????? Help?

    Thanks

Peter my 70's tack cable goes from out of the firewall to the tach cable connection at the distributor. Cable does not go around anything.

      Peter,

This is how the cable is routed on our 1972 350. Assuming you have a 350, the other variable is how your distributor is positioned.

Make sure that the distributor is installed correctly. Otherwise the tach cable will be at too great an angle.

        Ask me how I know

Peter, I believe the repro cables may be a bit longer. and also note that the distributor must be indexed correctly so the cable does not bind. Larry pick appears that the dist. is routed on the correct side of the shielding but maybe maybe one tooth off, it appears that the cable may have to much of a bend as it enters the Distributor. Thw vacuum advance should be routed behind the plug wire support.

I agree with Ed's assessment of the picture posted. If you have the 1968-69 TIM&JG we reprinted the page from Chevrolet Service News that shows the correct midyear and C3 distributor orientation and their differences. When we do the next 1970-72 manual I expect that image will also appear. I will certainly recommend that to Stan. That image has been posted on this board at least two times that I can remember, and it was printed once in The Restorer. Aside from damaging the tachometer cable a wrong distributor orientation will result in a deduction during flight judging.

              Ed/Terry,

Thanks; you are of course correct. I'll reposition the distributor. Thanks for mentioning it.
