The door panels I received with the 58 I bought are Al Knoch parts that the previous owner bought in 2002. They are the std door panel along with the inserts. Neither have been put on the car. I also have all of the original stainless trim that has been polished. Last night, since it is so cold here and my garage heater starts to struggle once it goes below 30 degrees, I thought assembling these would be a good indoor project for the evening.
Once I got everything unpacked, I placed the insert onto the door panel and it doesn't fit very well. The insert mounting holes don't line up with the door panel holes and the insert seems to be too wide to fit between the upper and lower vinyl sections. Today I went out and made a template of the door showing the mounting holes and window crank hole. I placed the insert over the template and the holes in the insert line up, but the holes on the door panel are off by at least 1/2". Is this a normal occurrence??
So the question are, do I need to trim the insert to fit and put new holes into the door panel that match the insert? If I do trim the insert, I will most likely loose the elongated holes for the stainless trim and will need to make new ones.
