Fixing to get a 67 sunfire yellow coupe ready for painting. Wondering what is best a bcc/cc or a single stage urethane paint. Best meaning, I have all intentions of getting the car judged at ncrs events. I don't know if the single stage would be easier to come close to a "factory appearance" over a bc/cc paint. Any help or opinions are greatly appreciated.

Your judging manual will indicate paint will need to "appear" as it came from the factory. It's all in the details of the paint job. It can be done with either BC/CC or single stage. In your case, a solid color, single stage may be easier to be made to appear as lacquer. Another part of the equation will be your painter and their understanding of this process. It's not as simple as BC/CC or single stage.....a great deal of thought, preparation and technique will need to be used for a achieving a "lacquer look".

This is good advice. But be assured you will still get some deductions as the orange peel of urethane appears total different than lacquer. The grain size is twice the size of lacquer. I used single stage white on my 67 and it takes a 9 point hit for this deviation. But you will be happy with the ease of maintenance especially if you drive it.- Top

No matter what you do...If you are going to have the car judged...you are not going to be happy...NCRS judging seems to expect a crappy paint job....I feel certain that some or most original factory paints were faulty but i also feel that some were very good paint jobs....our 62 lost 33 points for paint being too good....That's the price you pay for getting what you pay for.- Top
