I need to work on that area of my '62 behind the front grille. I'd like to replace the horns; install radiator side seals; and, remove the grille. I'm dreading removing the hood. I'm wondering if I can open the hood to stand up straight, and then tie it up to the garage ceiling to keep it in that position. If I do that, will there be enough room to reach in there and do my work? Anybody done this?

Re: C1 Hood
I have removed and installed the radiator, side seals, and grill, as well as the eyebrow moulding and horns with the hood in place on a '61. I see no reason you can't do this on a '62. Be sure to install a safety (bolt will work) to make sure the hood doesn't fall and close. No need to tie it up.

Re: C1 Hood
Can be done w/o removing the hood..... but.... bet you a beer that you will scratch the hood or the front end above the emblem and it will take you 3 times longer to do than removing to hood. Removing/replacing the hood is a 2 person job... better 1/2 and I have done it many times on a 62....... just make sure that you mark the placement of the hood on the hinges with bule painters tape.... order me a BUD.... jer- Top

Re: C1 Hood
My thin hands could get in there to do that stuff, but........If you feel you must remove the hood, this is what I do when I'm alone.
Raise the hood and put a bolt in the support for safety. Reach in to detach the bolts and remove the grille. Lay thin towels or clean rags around the entire perimeter of the hood ledges. Hold the hood up and remove the two bolts at the upper hood support and lower the support down into the skirt. Lower the hood back down on the towels/clean rags.
From the grille opening area, place small pieces of masking tape to mark the edges of each hood hinge where they attach, this to help realignment later.
Using your 3/8" ratchet with socket, or a Gear Wrench flexible ratcheting box wrench, loosen and remove the 4 hinge bolts attached to the hood.
From underneath, use one hand to push and lift up the hood while using the other to grab it from above. Stand up and grab each side of the hood, reaching as far towards center as possible. Lift and pull it towards you, dragging the towels along in the ledge to get a good safe grip, lift it up and it's off.
Reinstallation is the reverse operation. Once the hinge bolts are back on, open carefully and watch the front corners. Attach the hood support top bolts. You then can raise and lower the hood to adjust the 4 hinge bolts if needed.
