Car engine stalls when choke begins to open from a cold start. Carb is a 600 cfm elderbrock.

If the engine runs well after warm up then I think the issue is in the choke adjustment, get a manual for that carburetor and adjust per the book. -

It would be helpful to know what your engine characteristics are, i.e. engine model and modifications (if any), like heat riser butterfly in place any functioning, carb preheat slots open or plugged, etc.
Generally the Edelbrock electric choke will function well if adjusted right. They do have a tendency to kick off quickly, and not necessarily in tune with the engine's normalization requirements. The bi-metallic spring heats up (and choke opens) due to the internal electric heater and not due to the temperature of the engine. I use a different type electric choke on my 63 L-76 that uses a thermal sensor mounted on the intake manifold to sense engine temperature to control the current to the heating element in the choke. Don't know if these are still on the market as I picked up a couple a number of years ago from J.C. Whitney (1970's!).

Stuart this is a modified 301 engine, but I believe your on the right track, thr choke does seem to open a little too quick, thus causing the engine to stall.Comment
