I came across a L64-E66 seat belt buckle in my seat belt collection that had a broken spring so I decided to see if I could fix it. Using 2 somewhat large adjustable wrenches (each about 10" in length) I managed to carefully pry the edges of the chrome plated backing plate just enough to pop out the knurled rod. A third hand would be helpful with this procedure. Next I was able to remove the very small C-clip and carefully drive out the hinge pin.
The buckle consists of a total of 10 different pieces. The main springs is broken and I am missing the smaller spring and bowtie emblem. The black pot metal flipper is easy enough to clean and repaint but the chrome plated backing plate really should be re-chromed. Dr. Rebuild has a spring kit for $15 and bowtie emblems for $11 or $26 plus shipping for 2 buckles. I usually avoid reproduction parts but in this case I have no other choice. The only expensive part is to have the backing plate re-chromed which I yet to get a price. I might just polish the chrome backing plate with my motorized cloth wheel.
