I should have asked this question before driving 85 mph

Hi, well as usual , I can not keep from driving my car, weather , repairs, it does not matter, if it runs, the roads are OK I am off.

Well you know I took my trim off to fix dents and polish....

The sun did come out....I did jump in the car.....I did drive fast..

Question I should have asked. Does the trim hold the glass in or does the rubber gasket ? Not a good time at 85 mph !

Hi, not yesterday, but a few days ago, I could have been doing a 360 on the ice. It is hard to find a local metal polisher to do the trim. They say it is a pain, and they would be happy to show me how. I do not want to send it out for 6 weeks to MI or someplace in Midwest.

Jack-You might check with Extreme Rod and Custom in Portland. They do some impressive work and may do polishing in house or know who does it in the area. Bill

I'm petty sure it's Extreme Rod and Custom. Of course, Portland, Maine. The one on the other coast is a fake. When I stopped in it was underneath a well known Tile company, whose name escapes me. If you can't locate it PM me and I will check further. Bill

Hi, thanks, what kind of polishing wheel. On a drill or bench grinder ? I think I will do it, just want to use the right tools. I can screw each piece on the birdcage for support while polishing except for the front piece.

Hi Jack. Hope all is well w/you!

I was afraid/reluctant too at first to tackle this job. When I restored my hard top last winter, I had to re-do the trim and decided to dive in myself. I peened out the dings then sanded them smooth (that's right, sanded) with some very, very fine emory paper. I used the emory paper to remove heavy scratches too. I then moved to stainless polish with 00 steel wool, then polish with 0000 steel wool. It turned out perfect! No more fear for me.

The attached photo is the best one I have to show how it turned out. Not the best view, but hopefully you'll get the feeling for just how nicely it turned out.

Don't be afraid Jack - JUMP IN!

Re: I should have asked this question before driving 85 mph

Don, is that you, how are you, I hope the year has been good. As you can see and may have read, quite a year for me. Still working hard on the TV project, editing taking place now on trailer. I have been invited back to France to attend the 24 Hour Le Mans race as a guest of the Corvette Club of France. Now I just have to get to France, borrow a C2 for 3 days, attend pit parties, maybe a lap or two. May have a crew along to film. Then fly back to Maine next day, meet over 200 Scandinavians in Times Square on July 1, . They are bringing in over 100 American Vintage Cars from Europe to drive the Lincoln Highway from NYC to CA. I will lead them to New Jersey, they should have fun on their own from there.

Back to my trim. You used emery, then just steel wool by hand with polish. Ok sounds good to me. I will try it.

I will keep you posted on the travels of the Corvette Vagabond

                      Jack

Glad you found it. Here in central Maine I'm needing both snow tires and chains on my 54 to get out of my driveway.
