    Looking for Bowtie Award Information

I have an unrestored '88 convertible which I belive has a good chance at earning a Bowtie Award, and I plan on trying for it at the 2013 National. The driver side mirror and headlight cover have been repainted as well as the valve covers. The alternator is not original. Aside from that, it's all as delivered. I am the original owner. So far I have only found a general description on the NCRS site and don't see any judging manuals like those for Flight or PV judging. To date I have two chapter top flights and a regional PV. Any information with regards to the Bowtie Award would be appreciated. THANKS!

    Fred,

The book you are looking for is the NCRS Judging Reference Manual

There you will find that the NCRS Chevrolet Bowtie Award is for 1953 to 1982 Corvettes.
The award your Corvette may be eligible for is the NCRS Chevrolet Crossed-Flags Award for Preservation Excellence. There are a number of prerequisites, including that the car must have achieved an NCRS McLellan Mark of Excellence Award within the three years before the National Convention at which the car is presented for the Crossed-Flag judging.

This information obviously leads to another list of requirements and a host of other questions. I suggest you get a copy of the JRM.
    Terry

      Terry,

Thanks for the information. I will get a copy of the JRM ASAP, but it sure looks like there is a lot to do before attempting to get a Bowtie. I find that the general description is indeed very general and in fact has some incorrect information:

"This award is available to any model year currently judged by NCRS which was manufactured 20 or more years ago".

Yes, that is out of date, and should be corrected. I know who to contact for that, and I will.

Re: Looking for Bowtie Award Information

          Fred,

More info is easily available on the NCRS site (though the Bowtie section needs amending as Terry notes):

NCRS - CHEVROLET CROSSED FLAGS Award This award was created by the National Corvette Restorers Society in 2006. The NCRS Chevrolet Crossed Flags Award is intended to recognize exceptional original, un-restored cars and encourage the owners to retain and display the car in its present condition. The NCRS Chevrolet Crossed Flags award is earned only at a National Convention by un-restored cars successfully judged and voted to be historically and educationally significant in four areas (Interior, Exterior, Mechanical and Chassis). This award is available to 1984 and newer Corvettes currently judged by NCRS that have received an NCRS McLellan Mark of Excellence award. Regardless of change in ownership or judging result the car may never be presented for judging again. The judged section requires a 90% pass with the following standard “Does the item, part, fabric, plating or coating appear to actually be that which was specifically installed or applied on this car at the time of manufacture”. If this is successfully passed the vote with the following standard “Does the area judged display significant educational and historical value which should be preserved in its present condition” is taken. Passing both sections in all four areas earns the NCRS - Chevrolet Crossed Flags award. Only 24 Corvettes have received this award.

Note the requirement that your 1988 would have to first achieve the McLellan Award before it can try for the Crossed Flags Award.

          Good luck!

Thanks for letting me know that needed to be updated. It apparently has been incorrect since 2004.
