    Anti Freeze-Non Corvette

I have a 2004 chevy truck, 5.3 engine with 32,000 miles and wonder if I should change anti freeze and if so what should I use? Thanks in advance

      Jerry and Terry:

The Zerex HOAT antifreeze is G-05........not Z05. I think Terry has Z06 on his mind today.

Use distilled water with the antifreeze.

If the antifreeze in your car is factory fill DEX-COOL, you can also just go back with DEX-COOL. Most of the folks who have issues with DEX-COOL are owners of older cars with different metals and solders in their cooling system than late model cars.

If it were me, I'd use just what GM recommended----Dexcool. For vehicles with all aluminum cooling systems, I think that Dexcool is best. For applications with any copper/brass in the system, I think Zerex G-05 is best.

One more thing: Zerex G-05 meets GM standards 1825M and 1899M. These are the standards which apply to most all GM cars and trucks prior to the Dexcool era (about mid-90's). So, Zerex G-05 is full approved for use in any C1, C2, C3, or earlier C4.

Since the advent of the Dexcool era, GM cars have required a coolant that meets GM standard 6277M. The only coolant I am aware of that meets this standard is Dexcool (irrespective of brand). Prestone says that their green coolant meets all standards for all cars but they don't SPECIFICALLY state that it meets GM standard 6277M. I e-mailed them asking for specific analytical reports on their green coolant, particularly its anti-corrosion performance. They refused to supply it simply saying that their coolant "meets all standards".

Years ago when I worked for Union Carbide, I had access to all of the Prestone corrosion data. A lot of it was also posted on the website if you knew where to look. All that is now gone and is labeled confidential/proprietary by the new owners. However, Zerex still posts this info on their website for all of their brands (green, HOAT, OAT, etc etc). G-05 has EXCELLENT anti-corrosion data/properties.
