Not quite lucky, about all that is good here is the WX. I tried to scrap a car that I owned and had title to and could not do so untill I re-registered it with a scrap title. The fees were more than the price I got at the scrap yard, can you believe that? I had to go to DMV and get paper work (certificate of junk) and register my own car again under a junk title so they could remove it from their records?

DOM, I believe that junk dealers in CA have to have a title to accept the car. It has something to do with chop shops. I was told this by a junk dealer, so I'm not sure if it's true or not.

To get a title for an untitled vehicle in NC you have to advertise and fill out some paperwork. When I was actively selling cars, I did a lot of business with a couple of garages. The cars they had were abandoned for many reasons ( did'nt pay the repair bill, towing fees, storage fees, etc.). I had them obtain a title before I bought it to resell, and they went through a simple procedure by advertising it. These were mechanic's liens for them, but the procedure for me was the same.

If I have a bill of sale, I don't think that I have to advertise. The only hassle in NC is they want all signatures to be notarized.

Paul, you can also get a title by bonding the vehicle. Obtain a bond, they will issue you tags and in 2? years issue title if no one steps up to claim the vehicle. I have a PU from Montana bonded right now. I would like to think my restoration is done by the time I get a title.

That's how it is in California and it's been that way for a long time. Ever go by a junk yard and see an old heap or, even, just a carcass sitting out front? That's the result of someone bringing it by to sell or give to the junk yard, having no title, being therefore refused by the junk yard, and just deciding to abandon it right there. The police have to impound it and "clear" it that way. Then, it goes to the junk yard.

It,s the same in Indiana. You need a matching title to scrap a car to a junk yard. They even take your picture twice even if you only have aluminum cans.

                Paul,
The problem I had with CA was that I had title in my name and previouse registration (before a non opp was required) and they still made me register a piece of junk just to collect $$$ when I could show proof of ownership.
