Attached is a couple pictures. Is it required to take the rear end out to take the yoke out to replace the seal ? I took it out last year and it was a royal pain . I was hoping for an easier method. would the nut be 1 1/8" Thanks for any positive advice.

Re: Rear yoke replacement
Not necessary to remove the diff just to replace the pinion seal. Method and tools are decribed in the shop manuals. Would be best if the car is on a hoist. You'll probably need the Kent-Moore specialty tools J-8614-1, -2 and -3.
The nut is 1_1/8".- Top

Re: Rear yoke replacement
Wayne P. the 63 is alittle easier if you still have the 63 housing in the car, The front two bolts are threaded into housing and will allow the nose to be tilted down. to make the job alittle easier. If not the 63 housing there are no short cuts.New England chapter member, 63 Convert. 327/340- Chapter/Regional/national Top Flight, 72 coupe- chapter and regional Top Flight.- Top

Don't forget to pack the recess at the forward end of the splines behind the big flat washer with Permatex #2 before you install the washer and nut; otherwise it can leak lube through the splines (they didn't add that note to the Chassis Service Manual until 1969).- Top

Re: Rear yoke replacement
Isn't there a crush sleeve on the front pinion that also needs to be replaced for correct bearing pre-load? I could be wrong, certainly not an expert in this area.- Top

Re: Rear yoke replacement
Chicago Rawhide and National make good seals, at least in my experience. If the seal lip failed, make sure the O.D. seal surface on the yoke is nice and smooth where the lip rides; if necessary, they make "speedi-sleeves" for that just like those for balancer hubs.- Top

Re: Rear yoke replacement
Request opinions on the pitted surface (where the seal lip rides) on this '986' cast diff.drive pinion (input) yoke [ 32 spline for '65-up 1310 universal joints]. Got it off eBay. You can feel the roughness with a fingernail, but not even a groove, or if so, under a thou deep.
I have another 986 yoke with a deeper (and smoother) wear groove from my FA_7_15_65 diff, and this has never leaked.
I show 2 seals; one on left is what I believe to be the original out of my FB_7_21_65 carrier, going by the stamped # 3852984, which parts history says changed to 3817883 on 1-68, then again to 3924031 on 7-68. Seal on the right is a Chicago Rawhide CR___USA____17190.
Where would I find one of these speedy sleeves ? Does the yoke seal surface have to be milled down to compensate for sleeve thickness ?- Top

NAPA has them - SKF is one of several suppliers; no need to machine the seal surface.- Top
