    Teak wheel glue?

Does anyone know what type of glue the factory originally used in the assembly of the teak wheel?

    Mark -

Eric Freeman probably does - he makes the best of the reproduction teak wheels. (704) 510-2250.

Mark -- there's an excellent Joe Clark article way back in the Summer 1980 RESTORER, where he interviews the engineer who was in charge of the teak wheel project, and who holds the U.S. patent # 3209615 on the design of this wheel.

As best as I can summarize without printing the whole article:

".... rough wood [individual segments ?] was to be fabricated into a round structure using a polyvinyl adhesive to bond it together. this wood was to be assembled into nine segments separated by strategically located cross-grained hardwood veneer inserts -- 18 total ...."

" ... upper and lower rim portions, once glued, along with the rosewood trim bands, were then shaped to fit the steel inserts ..... the fitted wood was then mated to its steel insert, using an epoxy adhesive .... final steps were cutting of the finger grooves and sanding/smoothing .... final finishing using at lest 3 coats of a catalytic urethane filler and sealer resulting in a smooth finish. This was then topped off by a final coating of a urethane clear coat to insure duraility and scratch resistance"

Mark, polyvinyl glue is a favorite in the wood industry. I've used in floating floor installations (Pergo will invalidate the 10 year warranty on thier glued flooring if it's not used). I've also seen furniture companies use it.

There was a Restorer article many years ago that detailed the process.

I had one of my patients who was a VP at Howard Miller look into anything that they still had regarding the wheels, especially finish products, etc. By the late 90s all the company had was a copy of the old Restorer article.
