    1962 engine rebuild

I'm starting to gather parts to rebuild my 62, 340hp. I do have (original block, 4-spd T-10 tranny, cam, crank, pistons, exhaust manifolds, oil pan & valve covers. Don't have (original intake, heads nor carb/dist.). Any suggestions as to what I should expect to buy? ie., type of parts or manufactures of parts recommended. Thanks.

    Houston,

Purchase all Federal Mogul/Sealed Power parts, also, read a post just a few days ago about a member that took his original engine to a machine shop with the instructions NOT to touch the stamp pad numbers and someone decked the block. All numbers gone so make sure the machine shop knows not to deck the block and get anywhere near the stamp pad numbers and get it in writing.

Timothy, thank you. Should I try to use any original parts for engine? ie., cam, crank

When I have an original block rebuilt, I get in writing " the engine stampings will be left untouched. If they are modified/removed in any way the shop responsible will pay $5000 in damages". That covers you in case they need to send it out for any reason. My shop has no problem with it as everything is done in house and they know the importance of originality.

Your rebuilder will tell you (if he's good) what original parts you can use. Unless you blew it up the crank should be able to be reused, pistons maybe, a lot depends on the kind of driving you are going to do. I would replace cam and lifters for sure. How many miles on the engine? Is it going to be a trailer queen? Are you going to race it in vintage car races? A little more information would be helpful.

            Houston,

You can reuse the crankshaft after checking for cracks and straightness, it's probably fine. Don't turn the crank unless it's absolutely necessary and keep the bearing clearances around .002, as you can purchase oversize bearings if needed. See if your machine shop can get some reconditioned 1967-up connecting rods as they are stronger around the bolt seat than the earlier rods, check the archives for some pictures of the connecting rods showing the extra metal around the bolt seats. If you can't locate the above, search here for the aftermarket brand to buy.

If your oil pump is the original, take it apart and clean it bringing the gear end clearance to .002. You can do this at home with some 220 wet sandpaper and a flat table. Your engine uses a 45psi oil pump relief spring and the original oil pump will give the correct pressure. Again, check the archives for info, it's easy and cheap to replace the pump but many people complain about the higher oil pressure with these new pumps.

Take very seriously the above posts about the stamp pad in writing. Make sure the shop knows the importance these #'s are to your corvette, if they act like it's a problem find another shop. If the bore is OK you can probably reuse the pistons and don't let anyone talk you into flat top pistons, use the correct dome pistons with the original replacement camshaft. The replacement camshaft part #'s are archived also so do a search and use only the exact spec cam, it's made to run with the dome pistons. Don't surface the heads unless it's absolutely necessary and use a GM shim head gasket, they are approx .022 thick, I think the part # ends with 7111 but not 100%.

Stay with all factory replacement replacement parts and if you have questions ask them here as there are some pretty smart people here willing to share advice.

Houston, Replace the cam with one from Fed. Mogul. CS113-R. Solid lifters AT 992. Dead nuts for the original cam which is the Duntov 3736097. Don't let your engine builder talk you into a modern day cam. There are 100's of cam posts here but you will be safe with the FM parts.
Recently I ordered the above from Car Quest. Total bill was less than 200.00
Google info on the correct oil as if I say anything here the guys will be upset as 1000 posts on oil. Good luck, John
