Guys, I am still working on my 1956 Corvette. My wife passed away earlier this year and I had surgery on my hand about three months ago which has slowed the progress of my project. I have had the car running but it doesn't run well for very long. The engine is a 265 with dual four barrel carbs with an NOS camshaft and mechanical lifters. At one point I had carburetor problems but I sent them out and had them fixed. My problem now is that the engine runs all right till you put the air cleaner on and then it loads up and puts out black smoke and then dies. A buddy of mine who was helping me discovered that the air cleaner element was restricting the air flow. I purchased a reproduction air cleaner which uses a paper element which came with it. I have correct reproduction air cleaners (cleaned with kerosene) that are used for judging. The paper air cleaner element is similar to one that would be used on '65 to '67 GTO's that have a similar low profile air cleaner. Has anyone else experienced a similar problem with a reproduction dual four barrel carburetor air cleaner that uses a paper element? Thanks in advance! Brooks Glover (2141)

Re: Air Cleaner to Carb Air Flow Problems
if your carbs have the brass cross over bowl vent tubes those air cleaners could be too close the the vent blocking the air from coming out of the bowls raising the pressure in the bowls forcing fuel out the boosters nozzles richening up the mixture- Top

Re: Air Cleaner to Carb Air Flow Problems
Clem, I thought of that too. At present I have the air cleaner installed without air cleaner element. The engine runs fine and I guess the air cleaner is at least keeping out the gravel. I still think I may have a defective element. Thanks for your reply. Brooks Glover (2141)- Top
