That is true. Old Corvette racer JIM JEFFORDS was from Milwaukee and the EXCALIBUR was built by BROOKS STEVENS of Stubaker fame. BROOKS was good friends with Jim, and JIM had great connections with GM and Chevrolet from his racing days. The cars were not selling, so Jim said lets put a big Chevy engine in it. He called Chevy, and bingo, 18-24 left over 67 L-89 enginers were installed. Over the years, many cars got a ''free upgrade'' 454 so collectors who needed ''real'' L-89's for their Corvettes could get happy.

Here is one of the 16 original L89s that lunched the original motor early on. This car has a factory stamped L89 (no VIN) dated correctly for the car. It came out of an Excalibur. It also has a boatload of factory documentation from Yenko Chevrolet and the original owner, Harwood Dorman still lives in the same house he lived in when he ordered the car.
I took this pic during its Uniroyal Laredo-ectomy...

No, it hasn't - the new 4th Edition '68-'82 Spec Guide (Spring 2011) doesn't show an "AW" axle code for 1972.
All the more reason to send a note to Eric.

Yup...Robert worked a deal to sell the Excalibur AND restore the car.
