    Sleeving an unrestored caliper.

I am working on a low mileage C3 Corvette that may be a Bowtie candidate.
Have any of our members had their calipers resleeved without molesting the outside surface of the caliper.
I haven't starting to call any of the vendors yet, but if the castings are relatively clean, it would seem to
me to be a simple process. Yes/no ?

There is absolutely no necessity to alter the outside surface of the caliper when stainless steel sleeves are installed. However, some rebuilders do grind one of the surfaces in order to provide a convenient and easily visible surface on which to stamp their ID mark. But, the ID mark can be stamped on other machined surfaces of the calipers. Some rebuilders might even be willing to not stamp an ID mark but you'd probably lose warranty protection in such a case.

You say it's a low mileage car. How bad is the bore? Does it need sleeving or can it be cleaned up and rebuilt. If there's no pitting and ridges it can be honed and reused as is. People are too quick to sleeve hydraulic cylinders.

Thanks for the responses guys. The bores are too bad to hone and reuse, so they will have to be sleeved
if they are to be reused.

I have fixtures and milling cutters, for both front and rear calipers and a few stainless sleeve rings for the do it yourself guy. I should bring them to Carlisle.

            Dave,

I know that Vette Brakes will return your calipers to you for a small ($10 or so) special handling fee. I suspect that if you called and spoke with them they might avoid repainting the caliper as well.

FYI, my Bowtie car, and others I know, have resleeved and repainted calipers. It will not keep you from the award - but I fully understand your desire to keep the originals.

That's a Coke or Pepsi question, Jerry. You'll get convincing arguments both ways. I'm an original lip seal guy.

Gene, Thanks for the offer, but I was able to get them taken care of.

Check into Apple Hydraulics out on the east end of Long Island. They will do what you are asking about. They will also sleeve your master cylinder if needed and you will never know from the outside... Decent pricing and pretty fast turn around. Joel
