    1965 Fan Question

I am enclosing a couple of pictures of the clutch fan on my recently purchased '65 Coupe. Can any of you folks tell me if this looks like the correct fan for this non a/c car? Thanks for any help.

A bit more information about this car: at one time this car had some sort of aftermarket a/c on it. They likely changed the fan at the time they put this long-gone unit on it.

      Mike,

From your photos the fan APPEARS to be a 64-65 Corvette w/AC 7-blade fan, GM # 3853943, made by Hayes-Albion.
Are the rivet heads "domed" or "flat"?

The fan is the 7-blade style used on a '64-5 a/c car (congratulations). The heads of the rivets seem to be flat [rather than mushroom style], so it may be a service unit.

As to the fan clutch, I see straight fins on the back, which usually points to a Schweitzer design (see front pic attached, with bi-metallic strip. Alternate design clutch has fins that curve slightly towards the circumference, and have a bi-metallic coil on the front side, with square fluid reservoirs; Eaton design, (second pic). Both are acceptable, but there's also a shaft length and dating issues if you really want to get into it .

          Mike -

As you're probably aware, somewhere along the line the original aluminum radiator was replaced with an aftermarket copper/brass unit.

John: Yes that has been pointed out to me. This car had an aftermarket a/c unit on it at one time. I wonder if they put a higher capacity radiator on it at the time that unit was put on. I will eventually put the correct Dewitt's replacement unit on it. The car is going to be judged in Nov at a local (Louisiana) Chapter meet. Although the car is a pretty pristine 82k mile, three owner car (original paint, interior, engine/trans, etc) , there is much not correct about it. The judging will tell me where to start.
