Re: 67 convertible door outer window seal

    John,
I took another look in the 67 JG and realized I had been looking in the wrong section. I found on page 56 under Door Glass and Trim the reference to the attachment of the rubber seal with small flat head rivets. I am now concluding that since my 67 is an early production (# 179 september of 66) that the moulding with the seal attached with staples is left over from sometime in 66. Theory being that there was a bin with a bunch of these in it and one was taken from the bin when needed without any real attention to whether it had staples or rivets and if it was from the new batch or left over because they looked the samefrom the outside of the door. Still unanswered is the difference in the rolled edge size and the U clips. I attempted to upload some pictures but am getting an error message that the size is to big and that I have to manually adjust it which I have no clue how to do. When I figure that out I will post the pictures.

      Neal,

Long day and before I could get to my books I think we have the answers from John. Mid 66 change to riveted construction. I suspected this would be a natural for progression away from staples. Here is why.

I have been involved with lots of trim parts that were stapled. Its not the most accurate assembly method and piercing the stainless trim could have presented deformation and or quality issues for one or both of these items; so at some time, if a faster cheaper method came along...it got implemented.

Now along that theme I did get two April 66 data points and both these cars exhibit a rivets construction on both doors.

As far as what to do about mixed construction on your car? Two things, evaluate closely if one of these was changed early on as the service parts supply line would undoubtedly be full of the stapled construction for some time until exhausted and that could have taken longer that a couple of years.

Better is to get more members with un molested Bow Tie survivor cars to see what the data shows.

Photo re sizing... Microsoft picture viewer, open the picture, edit from the top menu, then at the right choose re-size, the mid category 640x860 or something close should work, save as a different name. Then try a post.

        Neil,

I am almost positive the small bead and four clips are 1963 parts. These trim pieces were attached to the metal door reinforcement at the top with the U clips and the small screws. They slid up into the metal reinforcement, the screws held them flush.

Post a picture of these parts if you can.

If I did this right there should be 2 pictures attached. I shows the mouldings from the side with one set having the U clips(2 clips on one of them are broken off). The other picture was my attempt to show the mouldings on edge to show the difference in the diameter of the rolled edges. The mouldings with the clips having a smaller rolled edge.
          Any more opinions on application?

Tim -- First thumbnail (bottom wipe) is off my '63 convertible VIN 07055, that I replaced with service sometime around 1978. Notice the round [circular] stainless bead, not oval with a flatter ellipse curve on the top side, shown above it.

Top wipe is service, IMO, given the description by others; 3 rivets; 4 mounting holes for screws. The top bead surface has a wider ellipse than those on my '65 convertible and coupe; 3 staples on the convertible; didn't verify the coupe. Believed to be original.

Second thumbnail is more detail on the '63 wipe. Four U-clips; Five staples, and four holes to mount with small screws (I believe they are flat head countersunk).

              Neal and Wayne,

Thanks for the good pictures showing differences in the 1963 parts. My 63 coupe parts are good condition but the clips are gone (rusted). Anyone have a good suggestion how to replace these clips.

I also wanted to add I replaced the rubber only with service GM parts as it is mentioned the complete assembly came as a service piece. My problem is the clips, there gone..
