speedo cable - why two pieces?

Does anyone know why GM used a two-piece cable? Just curious...

I'm assuming that there would be a judging deduction if I used a one-piece replacement, as you can see the junction of the cables under the car (at least I can see mine).

    Thanks

Later cars with cruise control required a two piece cable to accommodate the drive/sensor unit located in the engine bay.

That would make sense, however they started using two piece, long before they started installing cruise in vettes. Also where they connect seems to be much lower than any junction with cruise components. Just found a nos lower cable, took a long time!
