    5sp conversions

I have been thinking about a 5sp for my 65 fuelie. I like the 4.11s around town but hate them on the highway. I like my 3.36s on the highway but they are not so fun around town. The 3.36s with a .82 OD 5sp trans would seem to offer the best of both worlds. Can anyone who has researched this offer any comments on the different kits out there from Hurst, Keisler and others? Thanks

    Mike

    Re: 5sp conversions

I have a number of friends who have put the Tremec 5 speeds in both C1 and C2 Corvettes.
Keisler makes a nice package but it can be done much less expensive by purchasing from some of the other guys.

Thanks Bruce. What are the differences between different suppliers? They all seem to use the same basic Trimec trans.

        Price is the big difference.
A friend of mine bought the trans and car specific shifter then had his driveshaft shortened and that was it. It was a few years ago and cost around $2400.
Got it from a company in Indiana.
Google Tremec 5 speed and you should get some info.

I have a Tremec 5 spd from Kiesler with a 3.70 rear and a 0.64 overdrive. I am very happy with the setup. Previously I had a 3.36 rear in the car and it was an ok setup but the change to 3.70 really brought the car to life. I went with the 0.64 od because I knew that I was eventually going to change the rear from the 336 to something lower. If you are going to stay with the 336 I would say the 0.82 would be a good choice.

my son and i just put a tremac 5 spd into his '66 mustang coupe.
it can be, but not always simple to do!!

we bought our parts from Modern Driveline.
Bruce owns the company and was excellent to deal with.
He is honest and straight forward
and will respond to your calls and e mails in short order.
here is the link to his site:

Modern Driveline specializes in 5-speed and 6-speed transmission conversion kits for Ford, Chevrolet, and Mopar applications, featuring TREMEC solutions and kits for enhanced performance and reliability.

this will tell you the basics of what you would need
            to do the conversion.

            BTW....the 5 spd is fantastic....
great to tach only 1500 at 55mph on the highway!!

we will be going to Good-Guys in Des Moines, Ia in about one month

                sorry 'bout that chief!'
Bruce Couture was who owns Driveline

many just find a 5 spd that came out of
                an 80's V-8 mustang
ie about $500-800 or much less
if a good one is found in a junked car
                and install it
this would be the cheapest way to go

The other difference is customers service. Keisler doesn't have any. There are other posts about this. I went with Hurst before they acquired it. Better price, very good to talk to, great tech help over the phone. Much easier to do to a C2 then a C1. 3:36 would be a great gear, I have 3:70's and first gear is tire burning. Rememer the different OD have a different first gear also.

The Tremec TKO 600 has 2 versions, 0.64 od and 0.82 od 5th gears. The other 4 gears are identical.

                      Re: 5sp conversions

Thanks to all. I will explore the used trans route and call the vendors mentioned.

It wasn't completely clear to me but was Keisler aquired by Hurst or did Hurst aquire Keisler?

Now that my 69 L89 project is finished and looks so good, I need something to do!

Mike, the Tremecs are pretty knotchy to shift and do not shift well above 6K RPM, the cure for this is to use faceplated gears from Liberty Transmission which make the trans shift more like a Muncie. For a cheaper way to go for use with a mild 327 is to use a World Class 5 speed from a V8 Camaro or Firebird with its bellhousing. This will out the shifter in the correct location for a C2. Be sure to look for a mid 80s trans without the electrical speedometer.

You can also use a Mustang WC 5 speed but it requires an adapter plate and the bellhousing bolt pattern is different.

                          I have a 1975 c3 with a 388 stroker, m22 and 411 gears. Feb 22 I ordered a Keisler perfect fit RS 600 5 speed. The ratios are as follows. (1)

                            Re: 5sp conversions

OK first, Hurst bought Chevy Classic 5 Speed not Keisler. With 4:11's first gear will be like having a 4:55 rear end, awfully tall in my opinion but if you have a motor pulling 7 grand maybe not. I have 3:70's and can start in second gear with my 5- speed and 383 stroker. First gear will fry the tires. If I were to do over and I probably will I would run 3:36's in the rear and this gives you the first four gears like a 3:70 rear end.
                            Just my 2 cents
