    SB Freeze Plugs-source

The '56-'57 JG says the engine block freeze plugs were plain, no size or logos were stamped into the bottom of the cup. Anyone know of a source for these? Thanks.

    Rob,

You can get correct, no-logo freeze plug in brass from:

    Cresap Automotive Machine
    631 N Mechanic St
    Cumberland, MD 21502
    (800) 850-8794

The cost is $2.95 per plug + S&H; about $34 total for a set of eight.

      Rod,

If the original freeze-plugs for '56-'57 were steel instead of brass, LIC has them, no size or logo stamps (LIC p/n 21-41A).

SB Freeze Plugs-source; brass vs. steel

        Scott,

Originals were undoubtedly steel, not brass, but presuming the block and freeze plugs are to be painted, why not use brass and never, ever worry about one rusting though, as steel will eventually do? That's the plan for my '66 anyway.

          Hi Gary,

That is an excellent point. I thought I remembered reading in the archives that the judges check for steel or brass, but I'm not sure now. I just checked the "Mechanical" judging sheet, and I didn't see anything for freeze plugs.

Since the steel ones have lasted more than 50 years, why go with brass? I picked up steel ones with no logos or other stampings from the local NAPA for about .50 each.

Thanks for all the responses. My local NAPA says theirs have the size stamped in them, but I'll check with the other suggested sources. Appreciate the help.

Put a little body filler in the stamping before you paint it then. No big deal and it can't be detected.

I've seen steel ones fail in less than 10 yrs in cars that sit around a lot. I think brass is an obvious choice given the trouble involved in changing leaky ones.
