Does anyone know a easy way to change the turn signal repair switch plate on a standard 65 steering column , i was cleaning the dash gauges and bumped the blinker arm and i think i cracked the white piece that the blinker mounts on, i'm guessing this is the plastic plate or repair switch plate that you can purchase seperately. the blinker is a little loose now and forward of the blinker arm you can see a white plastic that is cracked.

Re: 65 Turn signal switch repair plate
Jim, I just replaced my turn signal switch and harness on a telescopic column. You should get yourself a corvette assembly manual. It will give you step by step instructions on how to fix it no matter what type of column you have. It will identify the part for you so you know exactly what to order. I had to take the upper column apart starting with the horn button. You'll probably need a steering wheel/hub puller to get to the problem. I fortunately had a friend who lent me his, saving me from having to buy one. Your column might be less complicated than mine.- Top

Re: 65 Turn signal switch repair plate
Daniel, you did pretty good getting it done like that. I had to take the 7 wires out of the connector, mark them accordingly, and thread them through the dash support bracket, then reconnect them. It took a lot of time in a confined space. I was lucky to have it work the first time because it's all new to me. Thankfully there's no computer to deal with.- Top

Don't you mean a service manual?- Top

Re: 65 Turn signal switch repair plate
Hi guys thanks for the help , i got it apart easy with a call from a friend that works on the midyears for a living , my 65 supplemental shop manual did not seem to have the standard steering breakdown as it did the tele, and the 63 shop manual shows 63 of course and that is different.i bought a steering wheel puller from napa for 11 bucks and pulled the top of the column off then removed the three screws and slid the blinker system out along with the wires, on mine just the part the the blinker lever mounts to was cracked so i wont be needing the whole blinker system . jimJR- Top

Re: 65 Turn signal switch repair plate
" because he had a lot of trouble threading the wires "
The 'rate buster' mechanics know to re-orient the connector at the lower end of the harness by 90-degrees (so it's in-line with the harness vs. perpendicular to the wiring) and then wrap BOTH the harness wires and the connector with tape. Keep the tape wrap as thin as possible, you're essentially 'masking' any sharp edges that might catch on components inside the column.
Now, using the snake wire that was dragged through/out of the column when the original harness was removed, pull the replacement harness into place by BOTH pulling/wiggling on the snake wire end AND pushing/wiggling on the upper TS switch end being both persistent and gentle...- Top

Re: 65 Turn signal switch repair plate
Russ, an assembly manual gives you a complete breakdown of the car which helps to identify what your looking at. The service manuals help to fix it. I have 63 to 65 manuals as well as an assembly manual. I need all the information I can get my hands on.
