    1963 Oil Pan Gasket

I read in the archives that there were 2 pans for 63. I recently bought a gasket set (Fel Pro OS 5197 C-2) and the cork runners match up, but the front and rear rubber inserts are not as thick as the ones I removed. ( Engine is 340 HP) Does anyone have an alternate part
    # for the pan gasket set?

Both ORIGINAL oil pans for 1963 used the same gasket set. However, in about 1976 these oil pans were replaced by oil pans virtually identical to the originals but with a slightly different front oil pan seal radius. The original pans had a front oil pan seal radius of 2-1/4" and the replacement pans had a seal radius of 2-3/8". Place the pan upside down on a flat surface and measure up from the flat surface to the apex of the seal radius to determine which you have. The side rail and rear pan seal pieces are exactly the same for all pans.

For the original pans, you want a gasket set that cross references to GM #14079400. For the later SERVICE pans you want a gasket set that cross-references to GM #14079399.

The Fel-Pro part numbers I have for the 4 piece gasket sets are as below:

    1963 original pans----OS5197C4

    1963 post 1976 SERVICE pans----OS5197C5

The OS5197C2 you have is the same as the OS5197C4 except that it does not include a few extra gaskets often needed when the oil pan gaskets are replaced. Both gasket sets are for use with the ORIGINAL 1963 oil pans.

By the way, I do not recommend the use of 4 piece gasket sets, except if one is striving for exact originality. I highly recommend the 1 piece silicone rubber gaskets as follows:

    1963 original pans------OS34509T

    1963 post-1976 SERVICE pans----OS34510T

      Thank you very much.

Do you have a gasket sealer that you prefer? The plethora of colored silicone that is available is confusing.

        Steve-----

I've used Permatex Ultra Copper for years with great success. However, lately I've tried Permatex Ultra Black and I think it's just as good.

Do not use a lot of it, though. Just a very thin bead and a little daub in the "corners" where the side gaskets meet the end seals. You may get a little "squeeze-out" in the corner locations but if you get any "squeeze-out" on the side gaskets, you've used too thick a bead. Use no sealer on the end seals (other than at the corners).

For the one piece silicone rubber gasket, use sealer ONLY at the "corner" area.

Make sure you measure the front seal radius on your pan so that you know which gasket set to use. If you use a 55-74 gasket set on a 1976+ SERVICE pan you will have a MAJOR leak at the front oil pan seal.
