    1960 door latch workings

Got my 60 back from the media blaster yesterday like that isn't scarey enough! I had decided to leave the doorlatches on after looking inside the door body and seeing that bunch of 50 year old levers and springs and gizmos etc. When it came back the passenger side door button had been pushed inside. It seems all the parts are there and functioning except the o ring which crumbled in my hand. The button lever and its support post are loose as a whole, looking at the other door the retainer and post are rigid and the lever moves off of them. The AIM is not specific to these parts. What holds the button, spring, retainer, and the rigid post all together and stiff enabling the lever to function? After taking the passenger side handle off I dont see anything inside the driver side that is differant from what I am holding in my hand.
