        Things sure have changed.

But some things change slower than others. In 1988 I bought wheel cylinder rebuild kits for my 74 Beetle for $2.50 each. They were either made in Brazil or Mexico, I forget. New (not rebuilt) wheel cylinders were around $6.00 and a new piston with rings was about $7.00.

I installed a new set of pistons, rings, bearings, and gaskets in my '61 in 1963. Total cost was less than $70.00. A new 327-375hp short block was less than $300. I could not afford the short block

I ran these numbers thru an inflation calculator, and that $7 set of pistons and rings would cost $87.22 in today's dollars, and the labor quote of $20 to $25 would be $249.19 to $311.49.

The brake shoe installation for $1.25 is $15.57 in today's dollars. You can't get an oil change for that price today!

Ya gotta love the salesmanship on that document. The "pitch" is spot on for what the consumer needs, wants; only the costs change.
