Can anyone help me with the wiring, I cannot figure out where the red wire goes from the ignitor II? Also what to do with the wires on the ballast resistor? HELP! DUTCH

The Pertronix website gives the following instructions for installation on a 12 volt negitive ground system;
Black wire to negative side of coil.
Red wire to positive side of coil.
Thats it according to them.

I think it was John Hinkley who posted a schematic of several ignition wiring diagrams some time ago that included the Petronix wiring. Take a look in the archives under posts by John.

I use the bottom diagram, because I also have the PerTronix Flamethrower coil on the 56.

I also have the Flamethrower coil. Before starting, do I just terminate the single pink wire at the top of the resistor and bring the double pink-black wire from the bottom to the top of the resistor? Then just use a single wire to go from the top of the resistor, over to the positive terminal of the flamethrower? I am just concerned about that single pink wire that is already connected to the top of my resistor? Could someone help me with my confusion? thanks DUTCH

Harry,

You will want to provide a full 12v to the Petronics and a full 12v to there coil. This coil is supposed to work without getting hot with very low resistance so no need for ballast.

The other wire at the ballast is from the ignition switch, all these wires go to the same side of the ballast.

I understand the wiring diagram. but what am I suppose to do with the 2 pink wires that were on the positive terminal of my coil, run them over to the top of the resistor? I also have a light pink wire on the top of the resistor, and a combined pink-black wire at the bottom of the resistor, which would be the ignition wire, which I should move to the top of the resistor. Also I should run the red ignitor II wire to the top of the resistor where all the other 4 wires are connected. According to every ones feedback, I should take all 5 wires and put them on the top of the resistor, and then run a wire also from the top of the resistor, back over to the positive terminal of the flamethrower. Sounds like alot of wires on the top of the resistor. Is this plan correct? This probably is not as confusing as it sounds. thanks for any feedback , DUTCH

The two pink wires on the coil need to stay on the coil. The two pink wires that were once connected to the either end of the ballast resistor now need to be connected directly since no ballast is needed with the coil you are running. You could either connect them together somehow and wrap them up in electrical tape and tuck them up it with the wire harness and then remove the resistor completely, or use the ballast resistor as sort of a connection block using only one end and having nothing connected to the other. Then all you have to do is connect the red wire from the pertronix to the positive on the coil and the black to the negative and you are done. You could run the positive from the pertronix to the two pink wires that were on the ballast resistor or directly to the coil, doesn't matter. I have this same setup on my '66. Hope this helps.

I just have 1 pink wire,going to the top of the ballast, and 2 pink. wires crimmed or solderd together, going to the positive terminal of the coil. The wires going to the coil give 12 volts with the ignition off.That is the same with the ballast.My question is, will my existing. wires going to the positive coil give 12 volts all the time, If so, I will not have to run a wire from the ballast over to the positve coil terminal? The 2 solderd wires that go to the positive coil terminal,where are they coming from? sorry about all the questions! DUTCH

Harry,

There should be one wire to the ballast from the ignition switch that has 12v with the key in the ON position.

There should be one wire on the other side of the ballast that goes to the coil +. The other wire at the coil + that's connected in the same terminal comes from the starter soleniod which provides the coil with 12v when the starter motor is cranking.

When the engine starts and the key is released to the run position the ballast is powered as in my first sentence.

To wire the Petronics like the third example, simply connect the wires to the same side of the ballast and run a separate feed to the module. Doing this provides a full 12v to the module that operates with the ignition switch.
