68 L71 TI and what alternator?

Ok guys - very blond question; how to verify if my 68 L71 had TI or not. Maybe even blonder; what exactly is TI and what are the compotents / where are they mounted? Does somebody have a picture?

Also, what alternator was used on those cars? TIM says 1100696, but Corvette by the numbers also lists a 1100693.

    HELP!!!

    Erik

Erik, all L71's had the TI (electronic) ignition system. The amp. is mounted on the front of the left fender well. Should be three holes. You could not get an L71 without the electronic ignition system.

      Erik -

You should have the 696 alternator - the 693 was used on cars without T.I. or air conditioning.

        Erik

What alternator was used was dependent on the options on the car. Cars without TI or A/C used the 1100693 alternator. It has a 37 amp output. Cars with TI used the 1100696 alternator with a 42 amp output. Cars with A/C used the 1100750 that has a 61 amp output.

The most noticeable change when TI is installed is the addition of a amplifier box. Attached is a picture of the location of the amplifier box on a C3. TI equipped cars also used a special distributor and coil. They also had a additional wiring harness used to link the components together.

Your best bet is to look at the 68 AIM under option K66 to see all the changes for TI equipped cars.

What's up with the "blonde" adjective ? Maybe that blondes are "easy" ?

I don't own a '68, but here's a few of the components: Yes, a '696' 42 amp alternator -- should be able to find one relatively cheap on eBay, as all the Hi-$$$ units are dated for 1967's down to '65.

Your Transistorized Ignition K66 distributor should be a 1111296, like the one shown in the top of the photo (except should be black rotor).

The 2nd photo is the special TI harness you should have. Depending on whether your '68 is considered early (pre-Feb 1968 ?) or later, it may be a different harness. This connects the TI amplifier to the distrib and power sources.

Last two are the amplifier; again, if early design should be similar to the one on the right, with the 2nd design base, but before Feb '68 ? when they went to a pigtail harness on the amp 1115343 ?
Perhaps some C3 person can chime in and give the proper break-point between the 1115005 and the '343' amps (and harnesses).
