    1963 brake cable attachment screw

Can anyone with a 63 tell me the correct size and length of the screw that holds the emergency brake cable to the rear at the location shown in the pic, (this is not my car in the picture). The AIM calls out screw and lock washer assembly part # 187979 section 5 sheet 6.

I don't have the correct size and I need a pic or a good discription, if I install a 1/4" screw it will not pass through the hole oriented like the pic. Turn the clamp around and it fits the other hole but it's closer to the driveshaft.

Sorry for such a silly question, I want to see if the correct part is around here and if not try to locate one..

      Tim,

According to my 63 bible for GM Factory Fastners book Ken is right on. It is a 1/4-20 thread indented hex head w/captured externally toothed lock washer, 3/4" long and zinch plated.

So what you are looking at here is the same thing as a oil pan, timing chain cover bolt but longer. 2 places to look for these length bolts would be the fuel pump mounting plate bolt and the convertable release cable clip bolts, even though the AIM calls out a different pt # I have removed them from these locations.

      Hope this helps, Rich

        Thanks Ken and Rich,

To install a 1/4" bolt in this hole there seems to be interference (threads)like no nut is used on the other side and the bolt just threads into the front differential support. Could I be correct or is there definately a nut on the opposite side.. It could be that this front support has been replaced at some time..

I assume the bolt in the pic is not correct..

          Tim,

First the AIM calls out for a nut to be used #11 on UPC section 5 sheet 6. If it were a self tapping situation they would have used Bolt #12 on that page which is the same as a ground strap bolt, able to cut it's own thread.

Second is the bolt in the picture wrong. Just because one source calls for an extrnally toothed lock washer does not mean that a split ring lock washer bolt was never used. I have run across this countless times restoring original cars, where a similar bolt was used. So it could be correct. In that case its an easy find with the split ring lock waser...that is a hood prop to hood bolt.

Re: 1963 brake cable attachment screw

              You guys are very helpful,

I can see why there is a nut on the bottom of this bolt. If that steel cable and clamp ever got loose by the driveshaft yoke there would be quite a bit of damage done.

Is the bolt head a traditional 7/16" across the flats, the one in the pic almost looks like it could be 3/8".

              Thanks again Rich and Ken..

                Tim,

7/16 hex for sure. It looks like ELH for the headmarking. If you get desperate for a bolt you can cheat and use a vent window regulator to T bolt. It is the same bolt but is 7/8" you could trimm a little off the end and dress the end with a dremel and no one could tell. If you want I could post a few pictures of how this could be done.

                  Thank you Rich,

I am looking at this vent regulator bolt, only difference is the lock washer. I will try to locate the correct part in my travels..
