I just bought the Blue-Ray version of the recently released to DVD movie, Star Trek. In an early scene, the very young James Kirk has "stolen" his step-dad's convertible Rally Red C2 for a joy ride. He is subsequently chased by a robot cop on a flying "motorcycle" and as Kirk/Sting Ray speeds towards a cliff, he jumps out at the last moment, saving himself but apparently destroying the Sting Ray.
By freezing the frames, the car appears to be a '65 or '66 because of the obvious side vents for a '65 or '66. The "small block" hood appears to be a '65 or '67 since it is without the '66-specific hood script. Further analysis shows a definite '66 egg-crate grille. By freezing the frame when the car is sideways going over the cliff, the Sting Ray appears to have the 1965 model wheel covers.
So, what is the model year of the now-famous Star Trek Sting Ray, a '66 with the wrong hood and wheel covers, or a '65 with the wrong grille? It seems impossible, from viewing the movie, to narrow it down to a single model year. Is there a NCRS member with movie studio connections who knows? Has anyone come forward saying that he/she rented the car out to "Star Cars" for this movie?
