    Chevrolet Airspeeds

On my way from Boston to Charlotte this morning, the TAS and GS presented a good photo op.

If you were flying south, why does the MAG Compass show a heading of 010? Bill

Air traffic Controllers sometimes have a different idea of where "South" is.

              Bill,

That is very perceptive...kind of. I was lost, but just for a little while.

Actually, the departure 'gate' from BOS had us heading North then East as well as South before finally heading in the 'right' direction. Just because we were going from the NE to the SW doesn't mean it is a straight line. Lots of traffic that has to be organized, even early in the morning.

              Rich,

              You are right about ATC.

Sun coming up over the Atlantic...

                  Clem,

True airspeed is Indicated airspeed compensated for ambient conditions, such as air density and temperature (I won't bore you with 'other than standard'). Groundspeed is simply the speed across the ground which varies with wind direction relative to the aircraft.

If a plane is traveling southbound with a 50 MPH tailwind and 400 MPH indicated air speed, then the ground speed (approx) would be 450 MPH.

If that same plane was traveling northbound into a 50 MPH headwind and a 400 MPH indicated air speed, then the ground speed (approx) would be 350 MPH.

First of all, ya dopes, I was just showing a cool PIC indicating Chevy displacements on my instruments.

As for airspeeds, what are ya talking about? There is a big difference between True airspeed and Indicated airspeed. The ONLY time Indicated airspeed is accurate is at sea level on a 59 degree F day.

Now, if your asking about True airspeed, as previously discussed, True IS Indicated compensated for ambient conditions such as temp, density altitude and instrument error. I didn't think anybody would give a Rats A## about such things as headings and airspeed differences.

All this technical talk about airplanes is making my stomach queasy, but, I just got off a three day trip which went through the NE US. Where's the Maker's Mark?

If you wanna get technical, what does the little 'NAV' indication represent at the bottom left of my HSI?

means the RMI (i think) is navigation mode and is tuned to a station frequency...... VOR/NDB

Now, if you fly at an altitude of six miles, and you travel 2000 miles, (not including takeoff/landing) measured on the ground, would you have also traveled 2000 miles at that alltitude?
