Re: When we are old ! what to do with our Corvettes

The most important each of us should take away from the question is: "Enjoy each day as if it were your last." Don't put off until tomorrow what you should have done today. You have a corvette--drive it and enjoy it--that's why we all bought them in the first place. As several members stated make it a family affair--nuture the love of cars in your chilren and then they will be fighting over the cars--just make sure you have one for each child and let them know ahead of time which one is theirs. The great thing about corvettes are all those fine people you meet and get help from--like on this discussion board----hopefully you will see most of them again in heaven and we can continue to discuss corvettes but on a different level of understanding.

I KNOW a lot of Corvette owners, but do not have any Corvette friends (or car friends) that I would sell or leave it to.
I'm not particularly a charitable person, so that's out.
It won't even NCRS Flight (not even 3rd Flight), so it won't qualify for an NCRS member to have it.
Seriously Tom, please don't do that, I'm sure you could get a line of guys that would give an arm for your car.

How about donating one's Corvette to the NCM? Would they only keep and display top-notch-cars and sell/raffle all the others? (Wouldn't like that too much...)

Actually most museums de-accession objects they believe do not merit display or they have duplicates of. It is done all the time in the art world. I would expect no less of the NCM. After all they are not a used car lot.

...which substantially "downs" my interest in a donation.......

The reason you say that is because you don't know Tom Parsons very well.
If you outlive me, you'll read about it in the paper someday.

I read with interest, Where, when you get old you can keep your house, car, amd 2000.00. I have an elderly uncle with no kids or wife, I am his sisters son. He is in a nursing home. ( 6000.00 a month) He is in Wisconcin. I was told by an attorney up there that when his money is gone the state will take his house and car for his nursing home bill. This Man was 82nd Airborne, made 4 combat jumps and survived the battle of the bulge. If anyone has any informatio on this I would appreciate it. He is mentally sharp but can not move and even must be feed. I know when they take his car and house it will kill him. He has gone thur almost 140,000.00 so far. I know this is off subject but would appreciate any help on this matter. He deserves more. Dale PS I live 2000 miles away A Private Message would be nice.

I will ask some questions of my relatives because they went through this. My family was blessed that neither of our parents faced this situation.

I suspect the laws on this issue are different by state, and the federal government has no dog in this race -- but WTFDKIK. If I am right one needs to consult a lawyer who specializes in elder issues in the state of residence of the elderly person. One is wise to look into these kinds of issues before being faced with the situation. Forewarned is forearmed.

                      Actually, no.

Hey, it's your car, I just thought it would be a shame to waste such a beautiful machine, but you do what you gotta do .

I'm moderately sure that there is some national similarity if not "universality" to the laws. I don't recall anything being vastly different when I lived / worked in PA but life was so different then that I would not guarantee it.

For Dale, as well as everyone else, I would highly, highly recommend spending time and speaking with a competent trust / will attorney who can describe your options. I signed my trust and new will last week, and even though I deal with end-of-life issues on a not-infrequent basis (I'm a family physician, for those that don't know) I still learned quite a bit. I don't care who you are, you will learn something and find it worth your time. Leaving it all for your children / relatives / friends to deal with is not advisable.

Oh, and we'd had a will previously but it's all at a whole new "level" now.

Joe and Terry, Thank you for your reply's. He was an active member of the VFW. He could go to the Vet's home at King's Hill Wisc. for free but it is 60 miles from his hometown rest home. He has lots of company from the VFW so he wants to stay there. I am open to ideas. dale

I'm with Tom on this one. I've always dreamed that when I knew my days were down to a very few (at 70 and with a bad ticker that may be soon), if I were able, I'd take my 63 which I've had since new and drive headlong off the edge into a deep quarry. I know just the place and the access as I scouted it out many years ago (McCook, Illinois). How's that for being profound?

I believe Medicaid looks back either three or five years, in Maryland it's a grey issue. Probably long term care insurance is best as living trust does not shelter assets (house, etc.) from nursing home expense..

Getting house and cars out of your name early is good idea if kids have no issues. Also, having children is no guarantee they will be there to care for you in, I suspect most would though.
