I took my column apart several months ago to rebuild and paint. I'm just putting it back together today, but I ran into a snag. I have a spare part. The spring to the left of the column in the picture was in my parts box, but not in my 50 disassembly pictures or the parts blow-up in the service manual. Does anyone know where this goes? Thanks.
Unidentified Tilt/Tele spring?

Re: Unidentified Tilt/Tele spring?
I think I figured it out.
I think the spring was part of a lower column rebuild kit that I bought from Paragon. I think that the spring is used in the bottom of non-tilt columns down near the reverse lock out lever, but is not used in the tilt column.
Can someone please confirm that this spring is not used in a tilt column? Thanks again.- Top

Re: Unidentified Tilt/Tele spring?
The upper end of the shift tube in the 1969 through 1976 Corvette standard (non-adjustable) steering column was a slip fit into the shift bowl. It required a spring on the lower end to push on the shift tube and keep it preloaded up into the bowl.
The 1969 through 1976 Corvette T&T steering column had a shift tube that was a press fit into the shift bowl so it didn't require a spring.
I don't know why the difference in design between the two types of columns.
