frame detail markings for 66 coupe

I'm finally ready to start reassembling my chassis (66 coupe bb, ps built in jan 66). I want to put all the right details on chassis and drive line. Some of the stencils and shim marks can be added at any time before body drop but are there any paints, markings that need to be applied before assembling. One that I'm concerned with are the spindles. Are they dipped, painted or left alone. I purchased the quantta chassis detail kit but clearification would help.

You don't need a detail kit for the spindles. Chevy orange engine paint works just fine. Most of the top portion of the spindle arm is orange except the machined pads. Some original cars are also seen with a wide orange swath down the top length. What ever your fancy..........

I don't know what the orange signifies.

          Joe,

In looking at your pic I noticed what appears to be blackout on the top of the sway bar with drips over the side. I imagine you did that for authenticity. What technique did you use and how did you decide what to spray? What product did you use?

            Michael,
I sprayed Krylon #1618 (BBQ Black) because it is easy to do the small jobs and has a satin black finish. Simply mask off surrounding areas with an old sheet and spray heavy from above until drips appear. I tried to replicate what was originally on the sway bar.

Bill - Here's another shot that may be useful. Note that I did the steering box markings wrong at the time this photo was taken. Paint markings would appear on an unpainted steering box. In my case, the steering box is painted semi gloss black but the black should have been applied after the paint markings. The paint markings are thick enough they can be seen beneath the black paint (not the color, just the shape).

I also used the Quanta chassis detailing kit. The documentation included was very helpful and I now have a lifetime supply of small bottles of paint!

Send me a PM if you want a few more photos and angles.

              Tim

I too ordered quanta kit. They recomend white on ends for early and mid 66 cars. (born jan 66) Joe thought it was blue but I'll go with their recomendations. Great picture.
side thought about a arm bushing bolts and ends. Black or zinc, or blacked out after ?? I purchased new aftermarket a arms (suppose to be to original specs) they came with shinny end covers.
                thanks for the picture

A-arms, upper and lower, were assembled (minus the ball joints which were riveted on after painting) and painted as an assembly. The paint should be glossier than surrounding chassis components but not mirror gloss like you'd see on the exterior of a car. So, a-arms, cross shafts, bushings, cups, and bolts are all painted as a unit.

By the way, don't torque down the bushing bolts until after the car is at its proper ride height. This will avoid permanently loading up the bushing rubber. Tim
