    Clunking sound

    ok all I need some input and ideas at what is causing this sound. When I'm driving my manual 4 speed 350 I hear a clunking sound with the clutch engaged and driving forward in all gears.The minute I take it out of gear the noise goes away. I first thought it was one of the power steering pump bearings or water pump or a drive wheel bearing but it wasn't.Could it be the throw out bearing grinding away or scraping?

    Kevin;

    When do you get this sound? Is it all the time as you drive; when you start out, stop, etc.. Do you get any sensation say from the floor or perhaps through the wheel when this happens?

    From what you have described thus far, it sounds like it happens when the drive train is under stress (under power). When you coast there is no stress in the system.... so we probably need to know more...

      I'm leaning toward a driveshaft universal going south real fast. Bill.

        Joel the noise happens all the time when it is in gear,I could be coasting at 50mph and you hear it then I'll shift out of gear and it goes away it's not really a load clunk but a tapping......tick....tick....tick...tick.No sensation from floorboards.

          Kevin,

          I agree with the prior poster.. I would look first at your drive shaft / universal joints.. To get noise out of them would suggest that they are pretty well worn. Depending upon when they were changed last, I would just pull the drive shaft down and swap out the universals. See if you can find someone local to you who can balance the shaft once the new universals are in there. Be sure to bring the transmission yoke when you bring the shaft in for balancing.

          Let us know how you make out.

          Good luck,

          Joel
