I recently purchased a pair of '96 sport seats. The owner was selling them because he is converting his LT4 into a race car. The seats have new covers and foam. The story is that a previous owner had the car in the basement garage of of his condo with the top off. The neighboring condo had a water pipe break that flooded the interior of the car so the seats were reskined as part of the insurance repairs.
I got the complete seats at a really good price and they have hardly been used since receiving the new covers. I don't think the seats are GM OEM because they are of a much higher quality leather than that on my originals and they are leather all the way around. My original seat covers are only leather on the "seating" surfaces with vinyl on the back and lower surfaces of the seat cushions.
My question is: Did GM upgrade the seat covers for the sport seats (and service replacements) sometime in '96 or thereafter? or are these most likely high quality re-pops. The corvette logo on the head rest looks "spot on" and the stitching patterns all look correct. If it wasn't for the fine quality of the leather and the lack of any vinyl surfaces I wouldn't be suspicious.
