    PS control valve/writing on firewall?

    Hello

I have a few questions regarding my 68 vette.

    1) My control valve (powersteering) just started leaking bad, all PS fluid is on the floor after a few days, maybe a week, it functions fine otherwise. Is it difficult to rebuild it myself or should I buy a new/rebuilt one?

    2) Are there any meaning with this writing on the firewall (engine compartment) or is it some former owners work?

    Drivers side

Passenger side, I think it says '433' ?

    3) Last, did the factory use tape to hold the body mount shims in place or did the car have a frame off at some time, both 1. bodymounts and both 4. bodymounts have tape like this picture below.

The writing is the work of the assembly workers in St. Louis before your car was a complete Corvette. The number represents the job number of your unit. I suspect the PB identified the car as a power brake unit. The tape you see is typical factory production......... The way it was done !

Either buy a new one or exchange yours for a quality rebuilt vavle. Keep the high pressure grease guns away from the valves. You can blow the seals if you are not careful. Some vendors lube theirs for life using a special colored lube. If they find anything else in there, the valve is yours, no warranty

WOW, looks like a clean original car to me. The tape is still in very good condition and the fiber glass is very clean. Have you owned it a long time? Low mileage?

I have only owned it for a year now. Its in a nice condition for a car that have been stored in 20+ years without much care. But it looks like that not much have been changed on the car. Alot of the mechanical stuff needs/needed work, but that was expected. I dont know the mileage. Before it came to Denmark and was put away, it was driven in california, so no rust Maybe thats also the reason that the tape survived.

I have verified by using a SeeSnake that there is a paper on top of the tank, hopefully Im going to find a readable tanksticker.

              Roald,

I have the same marking on my '68. On the driver's side I have "PB" and on the passenger side I have "AC 269."

My '68 is equipped with power brakes and C-60 air conditioning. My job number (269) is also written on the rear of my car on what is the outside of the rear compartments.

I was able to clean these areas but I left this part of the fiberglass bare when I blacked out the engine bay.

Here's some pictures of my markings. Your markings look great, mine were under some road grime.

              Anthony

Regarding the PS valve, if my memory serves me correct, that is a date coded part. Am I wrong? Given that I would be a little concerned about trading it as a core unit. BTW - You can buy a seal kit for that valve for about $16.

Re: PS control valve/writing on firewall?

If memory serves me some are dated and some are not according to a judge I spoke with recently. The dates are not judged for the valve regardless.

I found the "PB" under the shield on the driver's side of my 70-L46. My job number was under the rear carpet when I pulled it up, and on the rear valance. I have a hunch the job no. might also be under the passenger side shield.

My tank sticker is there too but I fear it is beyond being salvaged. Ratts

I only mention this because mine is fairly high mileage but since it spent most of it's life in TX the fiberglass remained fairly clean albeit dusty. The markings were well preserved. It has about 115k miles. Almost no rust either! I really feel for the guys taking apart those cars from the snow belt areas.

Those are great pictures of your markings.

How difficult is it to install that seal kit?

Nice pictures, I took a closer look and behind the AC hoses was also written 'AC' on mine The AC is still in my car, going to be fun to get that to work again after not being used for about 20 years

What is it, after seeing hundreds of job numbers on Corvettes that it is still cool to see !! I love that stuff.

Sorry, I've never done it but have seen them in catalogs everywhere. I'm just sentimental when it comes to original parts. Loved the pics of the taped body mount and grease pencil marks.
