    1970 gas cap

I'm javing a hard time finding the correct fuel cap for my 70. According to the judging guide it should read SEALED with no warning label or other stamping. Everything I find advertised as a 1970 cap has the warnings. Any advice on where to find one? I've been watching ebay since September.
    Thanks,
    Greg

    Greg,
They are scarce. Keep looking. You may have to buy a core and get it redone.

      Greg ---

There is one listed for sale on the 1970 Corvette Registry - http://www.1970corvetteregistry.org/ Under for sale/wanted. And if you have done so, please register your car while there.

They show up on Ebay relatively often, and nice ones usually sell for around $200. I got really lucky and found a perfect unrestored one for a Buy it Now price of $50!

Thanks, Kurt. My car is in the registry but I never looked much at the web site to see parts for sale. $100 seems a little steep! But then again, they aren't on the shelf anywhere...

I pulled a gas cap from a 71, removed open slowly caution (red label) and believe will be correct for 70 until I find out there is something different. Steve

Thanks Steve. I thought that was true also but I haven't seen too many of the red label type either. Just have to keep looking.

                Re: 1970 gas cap

The late John Woods, who had a special interest in 1971 Corvettes, used to say that the 1971 early gas caps, with the red plastic caution tag, were the most difficult to obtain of all the C3 gas caps. His opinion may have been colored by the fact that those were the ones he collected.

Your mention of that part has lead me to some good memories. Thanks.

Maybe it's because all those 70 owners are ripping the labels off...

                    Re: 1970 gas cap

I was looking for a '70 gas cap at Carlisle last fall. Didn't see one the whole time I was there, but I did see 2 '71s with the red label. They were nice too, and the seller wanted about $90 each. Not an unreasonable price for such a rare gas cap in exceptional condition. Thinking about it though, even if I had known that I could just rip the red label off and make a '70 cap, I wouldn't have. I'm a traditionalist, and a red label gas cap should stay a red label gas cap. I'm not criticizing anyone. Just my own preference.

What kind of adhesive was used to attach the red label? Interesting that the 1971 labels were so easily removed. I have one of each cap, 1970 and 1971. It may be nothing or it may be worth noting but the word SEALED on the 1971 cap seems to be shifted one letter to the right in comparison to the 1970 cap. At least on the ones I have and they are originals.

The placement of the verbiage "sealed" or "vented" can be a little haphazard in relation to the handle. Typically they are centered on the oppoosite side of the welded tabs, but I don't think there was that much concern about precision. I have seen some that are quite askew and even some that are on the same side as the welded tabs.

You're probably correct on that. Kind of like those RC-15 radiator caps. After so many stampings the dies get dull or shifted or the caps aren't positioned exactly the same. I suppose if one wanted a '71 cap they can just buy one of those repoduction labels from Paragon and glue it on an extra '70 cap.
