    How to DIY a Noise Muffler for Dust Collector

    Have a Torit Model 84 dust collector for the bed blast cabinet and it's rather noisy. Any ideas on how to make a noise muffler for it? The exhaust is on top of the unit. My thoughts are to build an exhaust extension box lined with some type of sound dampening material and extend it upward 4-6 towards the ceiling. Appreciate y'al sharing your ideas. Thanks in advance, Gary....

    Gary, I did a search for a noise suppressor for an industrial vacuum and came up with this site:

    if you can get a description and/or drawings, then you might be able to come up with your own "Rube Goldberg" "muffler" with readily available hardware and insulation or whatever.

      In the factory we built a box around something like that and lined the inside with foam rubber. The discharge may need to vent outside in order to cover it completely. That looks like a nice unit you have. If it works well let me know where you bought it. I have a 960 from Tip Tools and the blasting operation noise level is about the same as the vacuum.

        Lyle and Dale, thanks for the ideas. Lyle, bought the Zero bead blast cabinet & Torit dust collector years ago when a diesel repair shop went out of business. Dust collector is 3 HP, 1231 cfm so it's a lot noisier than my Scat Blast 35 unit. It does a very good job. Thanks, Gary....

          Hello Gary;

          We used a four foot long lined residential A/C duct.
          It stands on top of our unit to direct the noise upward and quiet the unit.

          It's easy to clean and move when necessary.

          Hope this helps.

            Ray, appreciate you for sharing. What did you line the duct work with? Thanks, Gary....

              Re: How to DIY a Noise Muffler for Dust Collector

              Hello Gary;

              Sorry, forgot to write " an insulated A/C duct".
              It has a foil covering over about an inch of yellow high density fiberglass insulation.
              HVAC contractors use it to form incoming air supply ducts to stop condensation from forming on the ducts.
              I don't remember the technical name.
              If you can't find it, write back, and I'll ask around.

              Hope this helps.

                  I wear my earplugs when I'm using the cabinet and my dust collector (aka shop vac with drywall dust filter bag). It's cheap.

                    Ray, thought that's what you were referring to but wanted to make sure. And thanks for looking up the insulation product.

                    Patrick, me too, but would like not to. Four foot of duct work's cheap compared to a ZR1 wouldn't you say?

                    Thank y'al for your input and help. Regards, Gary....

                        Thought y'al might like to see the results of your good suggestions. Built the muffler out of some air handling insulated duct work left over from making the a-coil air conditioning box for my shop. It reduces the exhaust motor roar/rumble significantly but you can still hear the air rush noise. A lot better than it was. Appreciate all of the suggestions!
