    Anti-chatter Springs on a 56

Two questions, gentlemen....are there supposed to be anti-chatter springs on all four drums or just the fronts? I've had some discussion with someone that just had their 57 regionally judged and he only had them on the front and swears that's all that are needed. I have a pretty original car and they were on all four drums when I got it and they looked like they'd be originals. Also, I can't imagine that someone would have gone to the trouble of putting them on 30 or 40 years ago on if they weren't on in the first place when they were later discontinued anyway. Either the judge missed it or there should have only been two. Judges don't actually miss things, do they? I know I never have.....

Also, are the springs painted black along with the drums or left natural? His 2 drums on the front were painted black and the springs left natural and they passed with flying colors. Anyway, just trying to get things straight before I throw the paint on my frame in the next week or so.

    Thanks!

That's a great question I had to look at my friends 55 drums and mine , some of his do (rear) and mine do on front and seem to have been black.
Over all these years many drums have been replaced on Corvettes, his and mine //front drums are original still "riveted" on and have the springs.
Judges inspect all parts under the body now??

Along with your dicussion about whether they should or should not be on, also be sure to talk about how to put them on. I had a thread a month or so back and got a couple of good ideas, but have not tried them as yet. It is a bear, specially for one person.

Good question...I got them off to have the drums soda blasted, but now I need to know whether or not I put them back on before painting (I'm still getting conflicting stories as to whether or not to have them painted or not). They came off easiestby just prying them up and over the edge of the ridge that holds them in place in the drum.

If I don't have them painted, then there's the question as to whether I go to the trouble of having them re-plated or just pop the $10 bucks each for repros. I'd prefer to use the originals...they were a bit rusty, but I they could snap back.

Any word out there on how well springs re-plate with a home plating kit?

          Roy,

Hey, I met you a couple of years ago at Hot August Nights. Missed seeing you there this year. Thanks for the response. As far as whether or not they are judging them or not, not sure on that. I just want my car to be as correct as possible. So yours are only on the front?

Could it be a random placement issue that was up to the workers on the line? Not sure that sounds right...I would think there would be some directive. I haven't checked the AIM, though. Did the anti-chatter system only work on the front wheels? I'd love to hear some responses...

          Thanks again,

Mark, should be on all 4 wheels. On original drums there's a grove they're supposed to go into. Yes, Roy Judges there's a Chassis section to the JM's and Judges are supposed to Judge underneath as well. The springs can be felt with your fingers on all 4 wheels when Judging the Chassis. Gary....

Thanks, Gary. Makes sense to me, but only having them on two wheels made sense to someone else....whatever. So, is plated or painted correct?

Mark, believe the original springs had some type of coating/plating on them. The entire drum assembly was painted with the springs in place. Gary....
