    1962 Gulf Oil car

This car is up for sale at the Pebble Beach Gooding Auction. It will be interesting to see what it brings.

Pre auction estimate is $950,000 to $1,250,000

Good luck to Vic as he is a super guy!

    Lets hope for a record!

That car went from Gulf Oil back to Don Yenko's used car lot, to Tony Denman, who raced it in 1963. It then bounced through a number of owners, including Terry Michaelis (who was Linda Layman Enterprises at the time and didn't have any idea what the car was). I bought the car in 1980 from a guy who had bought it from Michaelis. I sold the car to Vic in 2002.

check out www.goodingco.com and you will see the car.

Vic had the car at the Bloomington Gold Special collection being inducted in the Special collection Hall of fame back in 2005 when someone keyed the car on display.

It then went to Kevin McCay to be freshened up.

Mike you should go to the auction.

I helped Vic get a folder full of original Daytona and Sebring photo's of the car from GM.

With the Hussey brothers restored Bob Moat car at Pebble beach and Vic's Gulf Oil car at the Pebble beach Auction they will help set the pace for the future..along with the recent record private sale of a Grand Sport.

          Amazing!

          Joe

How many 62 Grady Davis cars were there?
Dr. Mike and Rev Mike. Sounds like a conspiracy. What chance does a poor folk have?
Dr. Mike: Did you get the log book? #2. Not long ago you asked if Doc raced a 61? I was too young then to care. I do know he raced a 62, a 63, and one or two 65's, etc. I believe he trashed one 65 and got another but that is just a rumor. Hard to believe those cars I worked on as a kid are worth so much bucks now. I mean they certainly were abused and wrecked continuously. Dr. Blatchely used to pour buckets of money in those old Grady cars. I ended up with a lot of the parts in the late 60's. I deserted the parts at my parents house. My father ended up having them hauled to the junk yard. I had more Z06 stuff that you could possibly believe(truckloads) and it all went to be melted down. I got it all for free. No one wanted that stuff in the old days. I had a two car garage full. A few of the parts are on my 63 LWC. Thanx, JD

                Re: 1962 Gulf Oil car

Grady Davis--Executive Vice President of Gulf Oil, got them into racing.
There were 2 61's, two 62's, and 2 63 Z-06's. They then went to Ford and won LeMans with GT-40's. These guys had some money to play with--far more than Doc Blatchley did!

                  Re: 1962 Gulf Oil car

Being a former Gulf Oiler, I may make an opening bid on the car; however, I may be a million or so $$$ short of what Joe believes it may go for. I wouldn't mind building a replica '62 Gulf racer one of these days.

A couple of years ago, one of the members of the Gulf Oil Historical group who usually collect retail merchandising stuff, had a couple of sets of points for a Corvette distributor that had been made in the Gulf Research Center in Harmarville for Grady's racing effort. No telling what Grady had the guys in the lab working on for the Corvette racers. It's good to be King.

As for the Fords that Gulf sponsored, I recall walking into the lobby of the Texas Commerce Bank in Houston one morning on my way to work (the bank was in the Gulf building in Houston) and there sat one of the LeMans winning GT-40's front and center in the banking lobby. Don't recall for certain, but it may not have been cleaned up after the race. What a sight.

                  Best regards,

doc had the 62 RPO, the 63 ZO6 that rich mason owned recently and a 66 425 white roadster that KC Stawmeir is currently restoring.Doc's last vette that he ran in SCCA was a 69 SBC roadster. i couldn't get the log books from doc's daughter. i too was given two pickup loads of parts off the 62,63 and 66 right after Doc hung up his SCCA gloves. included in the parts was the pass door glass with the window sticker still glued to the glass. i gave it to KC several years ago. mike

Speaking of Gulf Oil and their racing efforts--have you ever seen the "Golden Torque Wrench Award" they received from Daytona Motor Speedway in 1963? It was given to the top-performing pit crew at the 63 Daytona American race, and the Gulf crew was exactly the same guys as crewed on my car there in 62. I've attached some photos of the award.

Check the previous posts in this thread for the real thing--presented by Daytona Motor Speedway in 1963 to the best pit crew.

                              Clem--
I did phone interviews with all those guys when I was researching and restoring the car back in the 80's. LaRoche also did a fair amount of body repair work on the cars. He said "we took a mold off the other 62, glued it together, painted it white, and went racing the next weekend with it."
They were all great guys with a love for the cars.
