    1965 Corvette Carpet Advice

A friend with a 1965 convertible approached me with a question yesterday. He wants to buy a complete set of replacement carpets for his 65 roadster.

It's trim code 414. That should be bright blue, and that's what's in the car now.

I am not a 65 expert, and have no access to the 65 JG.

    He asked

    Is the carpet foam backed?

    Is the carpet "poly" backed?

    Is the carpet jute backed?

Is the jute backing available separately, i.e. not attached to the carpet?

Another factor to consider.... he wants to place a Dyna Mat sound/heat deadener type material down before replacing the carpet.

My questions: What is the original configuration?

    Chuck,

The carpet in most areas has a jute backing with a flexible tar like board material between the carpet and the jute material. The last time I checked, you could get the original type of underlayment separately from Al Knoch. Here are some pictures of the original carpeting in my '65 coupe near the rear storage compartment plus the back side of the original storage compartment cover carpet. Also a few pictures of removed carpet underlayment and reinstallation in a '65 convertible. As you can see by the lack of residual jute, there was no jute underlayment up on the sides of the inner rear interior surfaces, only on the very back.

    Hope this helps.

Thank you. That helps a lot. His concern is that if/when he puts down the Dyna-Mat-like sound deadening material, that the carpet with jute will be too thick.

A mutual friend with a 65 coupe bought carpet that is what I call "poly backed". No jute. He also plans to put down a sound deadener/insulator material. He hasn't gotten around to doing the job yet.

I think I'll call Al Knoch.
