I'm in the process of rebuilding the Steering gear box for my 1959. I know the judging guide states either semi-gloss black or natural cast iron is acceptable. It seems the same for C2 and up part way into C3 production as well. At least for C1, I know they were installed after chassis blackout, so would not have received that coverage. For my part, it appears my steering box was natural unpainted, though it had some black on it over old grease. So I will likely keep it au naturale.
Even so, has anyone heard or has a theory on why there is this difference is steering box painting, given they all came from the saginaw factory? It's just odd to me given you have the assembly with the painted steering mast jacket, so why not paint the box as well?
